ADAC Urges Motorcyclists To Prepare For Spring Riding

With rising temperatures prompting motorcycle season, safety checks and skills refreshers are essential for riders returning to the road.

As temperatures rise and spring weather brings an influx of motorcycle riders to the streets of Hessen and Thüringen, the ADAC Hessen-Thüringen is urging bikers to prepare adequately for the new season. Proper equipment checks are essential to avoid breakdowns and accidents.

Roger Dötenbier, a road safety trainer for the ADAC Hessen-Thüringen, emphasizes the need for thorough motorcycle checks after the prolonged winter pause. "After months of winter hibernation, motorcyclists should check their machines thoroughly to make them ready for spring," he said.

Winter can leave motorcycles covered in grime, depleting batteries and fluid levels. The ADAC has outlined key elements for bikers to include in their pre-ride checklist:

  • Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the motorcycle.
  • Battery: Check the charge and replace aging batteries.
  • Fluids: Inspect engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant levels, refilling or replacing as needed.
  • Lights and Electronics: Check lighting systems and electronic components such as clutch and side stand switches.
  • Brakes: Clear dust and dirt from brake discs, check brake lines, and test braking efficiency.
  • Tires: Examine tread depth, ensuring a minimum of 2 millimeters before hitting the road. Tires should be replaced if they are worn past this threshold.
  • Drive Chain: Inspect for wear and treat with chain maintenance products as necessary.

In addition to the motorcycle, protective clothing should also be inspected for wear and tear. Helmets, boots, jackets, and gloves should be regularly checked and replaced when necessary. Adding reflective strips or wearing high-visibility vests enhances visibility to other road users, crucial for safety.

With the long winter behind them, motorcyclists are advised to re-familiarize themselves with their bikes on shorter routes. "Riding a motorcycle is mentally and physically demanding. Those who haven’t been on a bike for months may underestimate their abilities," warns Dötenbier. "This can become dangerous in traffic quickly."

Challenges such as road damage, loose gravel, or morning frost can further complicate rides for bikers. Due to their narrow profile, motorcyclists can often become invisible to other road users, especially when making turns. Furthermore, many car drivers underestimate how quickly a motorcycle can accelerate, leading to potential accidents.

"A defensive and anticipatory driving style is key in road traffic," Dötenbier cautions. All road users, particularly in spring, are urged to drive considerately and attentively.

For motorcycle enthusiasts planning to ride after an extended break, the ADAC recommends taking refresher courses to hone their skills. Various beginner and advanced programs are offered in Hessen and Thüringen, specifically tailored for returnees.
