Actor Peter Navy Tuiasosopo Dies At 61

The beloved star of New Girl and Street Fighter passes away due to heart complications.

PHOENIX -- Actor Peter Navy Tuiasosopo, best known for his roles in “New Girl,” “Street Fighter,” and “Necessary Roughness,” has died at the age of 61. Tuiasosopo’s death was announced by his son, Manoah Peter Tuiasosopo, on Facebook.

“With a heavy heart, my family and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Our father Peter N. Tuiasosopo passed away this morning at 3:16 AM,” Manoah wrote. “My dad lived an amazing life and in no way does his impact stop here. We will continue to live with him in spirit, and as saddened as we are, he is without a doubt in Heaven with his brothers, sisters, parents, daughter, and Jesus, and no longer in pain. His strength, love, compassion, and kindness will forever be felt.”

According to reports, Tuiasosopo died on February 12, 2023, due to heart complications. Born on May 24, 1965, in San Pedro, California, he began his acting career with the 1991 football film “Necessary Roughness.” Following this, he had notable roles starting from appearances on television series “Down the Shore” (1992) and “Danger Theatre” (1993), to starring alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in the movie “Street Fighter” (1994).

Tuiasosopo also graced the screen with roles in several films including “BASEketball,” “The Fast and the Furious,” “The Scorpion King,” and “12 Rounds.” Over his three-decade career, he accumulated more than 60 acting credits, including memorable roles spanning both film and television.

His television work includes major series such as “Hawaii,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Easy Money,” and most prominently, “New Girl,” where he appeared from 2012 to 2016. His portrayal of E-Honda made him particularly recognizable, contributing to his standing as one of Hollywood's leading Polynesian actors.

Following the news of his death, fellow actors and fans took to social media to express their condolences. Ming-Na Wen, who starred with Tuiasosopo, stated, “I’m so very sad to learn the passing of my ‘Honda,’ Peter N. Tuiasosopo. We had a blast on ‘Streetfighter.’ Many fond memories working with Peter. A teddy bear of a man. Condolences to his family & loved ones.”

Fans also expressed their gratitude online, remarking on his significant contributions to film and television. “Peter Navy Tuiasosopo (E-Honda from the Street Fighter Live Action Film 1994) has passed away. Thank You, Mr. Tuiasosopo for making the character come alive. RIP,” one fan tweeted.

Manoah also mentioned plans for the family to hold a celebration of life to honor his father's legacy, stating, “My family and I will discuss the decisions concerning a proper Celebration of Life and will announce details once prepared.”

Tuiasosopo leaves behind not just his notable filmography, but also memories and impact knitted deeply within the fabric of the entertainment industry and those who loved him. His legacy as both actor and mentor will continue to resonate with many who knew him or grew up watching his performances.
