Acapulco Faces Rising Tide Of Crime And Disappearances

Community grapples with loss as investigations continue and safety measures are ramped up.

Acapulco has recently found itself embroiled in increasing crime and safety concerns following several high-profile incidents, including the tragic case of nurse Maura Alicia Campechano Hilario, whose disappearance gripped the community.

On January 3rd, authorities located the body of Campechano, 42, near the seafront, just hours after she was reported missing. Her disappearance occurred on January 2nd, shortly after she had completed her shift at the Hospital General and was last seen wearing her blue surgical scrubs. Speaking to La Jornada, Beatriz Vélez Núñez, the secretary general of the National Union of Workers of the Health Sector of Guerrero, provided details of the unfortunate incident. "Very regrettable, she left the work of the hospital, which I have been told, she withdrew money from the hospital ATM, boarded the bus, and from there did not arrive home," she stated.

This incident came amid heightened anxiety over disappearances within the region, with the 33rd monthly photographic exhibition of missing persons taking place just days earlier at the zócalo of Acapulco. Organized by the collective Memoria, Verdad y Justicia por la Vida y la Libertad, the exhibition highlighted the growing number of families searching for their loved ones. The emotional display served not only as remembrance and awareness but also as advocacy, pushing for justice for the victims.

While the community mourns, local law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to combat crime and narcotics trafficking. Recently, on January 5th, the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office, together with various national and state security forces, executed a search warrant at a property located in Acapulco's Costa Azul neighborhood. This coordinated effort stemmed from community tips reporting the residence as being involved in drug storage and distribution, received via the “Ponte Buso” app.

The operation led to the arrest of Omar “N,” and authorities seized two firearms, various types of drugs including cocaine and marijuana, and cash during the raid. The Attorney General's office expressed their commitment to continue these inter-institutional actions to combat drug-related crimes and assure the safety of Guerrero's citizens.

These incidents, including the shocking disappearance of Campechano, underline the serious safety issues facing the region. It highlights the need for community vigilance and the importance of law enforcement's role in addressing these growing concerns. The tragic loss of Campechano and the haunting reminder of other missing persons elicit fear and heighten the urgency for both community action and effective police response.

The state of Guerrero has historically wrestled with violence and ignominy tied to narcotics and organized crime, which continues to be exacerbated by the public sense of insecurity. Authorities are now compelled to evaluate their approach to this dire issue as citizens call for justice and protection.

Across Acapulco, the public is being urged to remain vigilant and proactive about their surroundings, especially as more individuals, like Campechano, become victims of violence. Community members stress the importance of turning to local resources and law enforcement agencies to report suspicious activities and assist with the investigation of missing persons.

Meanwhile, as the city honors the memory of those lost, such as the victims featured at the photographic exhibit, it's clear the path forward requires collaboration between the citizens, families searching for loved ones, and the police force tasked with maintaining public safety.

Tragedy often fosters resilience. The voices of the families affected by the rampant crime, such as those advocating for the missing and the memorials like the exhibition in the zócalo, set the stage for increased awareness and pressure on authorities to enact change. The collective grief can transform sorrow and vulnerability about safety challenges to united action toward accountability and resolution of these harrowing events.
