Abel Caballero Faces Criticism Over Local Engagement

Mayor of Vigo under fire for prioritizing media over community concerns amid infrastructure debates.

Abel Caballero, the Mayor of Vigo, has found himself at the center of political controversy and scrutiny as he navigates various pressing issues affecting the city. Recently, the Popular Party (PP) of Vigo criticized Caballero for his absence during key local celebrations, claiming he prioritized appearances on national television and meetings in Madrid over engaging with concerned residents.

The PP pointed out Caballero's absence during the traditional San Blas celebration, which took place on February 3rd, asserting it should have been an opportune moment for him to address the concerns of Bembrive residents about the extension of the A-52 highway project. This project has drawn significant opposition, with locals gathering over 6,000 objections against its current plans.

PP spokespersons criticized Caballero for avoiding interaction with the people, stating, "The mayor who last year hid from Vitrasa workers is now dodging Bembrive residents, who have made their voices heard." They emphasized the importance of communication and dialogue, urging Caballero to take responsibility and discuss alternatives to the contentious project directly with citizens rather than making excuses. The PP also highlighted the need to lift tolls on the AP-9 between Puxeiros and O Porriño as part of their broader strategy to challenge the mayor's leadership.

Meanwhile, the mayor announced new developments concerning the demolition of the Gol stand at the Balaídos stadium. Caballero's history of shifting timelines has become notorious, having initially promised completion dates for the stadium's renovations back as far as 2017. Reports indicate he recently stated the demolition would start by April, yet skepticism remains among local fans and officials about the reliability of these timelines.

At the Espejo Público program, Caballero reiterated his support for the current national political strategy led by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, advocating for ministers to take up significant roles within the wider party. "Ministers are closely tied to the society, which is why their involvement is beneficial for the party's visibility and effectiveness," Caballero asserted, emphasizing communal representation.

During his recent discussion with Óscar López, the Minister of Digital Transformation and Public Function, Caballero received confirmation of governmental support for the Sparc project—the upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility intended to boost local employment and infrastructure. The mayor expressed optimism about this investment, framing it as potentially revolutionary for the region's economy.

The Sparc facility will see Vigo become part of Europe’s advanced photonic microchip manufacturing network, aligning the city with future ventures already occurring within France and Germany. Caballero revealed how the Zona Franca has commenced preparations, with construction licenses secured already, indicating a commitment to advancing technological capabilities and creating qualified job opportunities.

Caballero showcased his aggressive ambition for Vigo's economic prospects, proclaiming, "We are beginning something with the potential to rival the current automotive sector within 10 to 15 years." The mayor's narrative is becoming defined not only by the projects he champions but also by the push-back he faces from political opposition, which sees this as yet another example of unfulfilled promises.

Reactions to Caballero’s constant engagement with media rather than direct interaction with constituents reflect widespread frustration. Several local leaders have voiced concerns over his absence during significant community events and called for greater accountability from the mayor. This sentiment encompasses the unease surrounding the management of local infrastructure projects as well as the disconnect perceived between Caballero and community needs.

Critics of Caballero argue his focus appears to be on maintaining visibility and influence at the national level, often leaving pressing local matters unattended. They contend he needs to bridge the gap between significant infrastructural developments and the everyday realities faced by residents as his administration continues to grapple with various initiatives.

For now, the political theater surrounding Abel Caballero remains dynamic. With major decisions looming—especially concerning the contentious A-52 project and the anticipated developments at Balaídos—Vigo's residents are waiting eagerly to see whether Caballero can shift from rhetoric to tangible results and relations with the electorate.
