Aaron Shattock, former Brisbane Lions premiership player, is fighting for his life after being crushed under the excavator he was driving at his home on the Gold Coast. The accident occurred around 12:50 PM on Sunday, when the heavy machinery rolled over, trapping Shattock underneath.
Emergency services responded swiftly, using hydraulic rescue tools to free the 44-year-old. He was immediately rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains critically injured due to severe and life-threatening chest injuries.
This tragic incident has sent ripples through the AFL community as tributes and well-wishes pour in. Michael Voss, Carlton’s coach and Shattock's former teammate at the Brisbane Lions, expressed his disbelief and sorrow. “I can’t believe it … it’s terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse. Our prayers are with him and his family,” Voss conveyed, underscoring the sense of shock felt across the sporting world.
Shattock is well-regarded not just for his on-field achievements but also for his contributions to the Labrador Football Club, where he is a life member. Following the accident, the club released a statement saying, “On behalf of the Labrador Australian Football Club, we send our thoughts, love, and prayers to the Shattock family during this challenging time.” They emphasized how dearly “Shatts” is loved by the community, noting his unwavering commitment since joining the club as both player and coach.
Cameron Caldwell MP also addressed the situation via social media, expressing condolences and shock at the news. “Aaron Shattock is dedicated to his family, his footy and the Labrador Tigers, and we were all shocked to hear news of his accident yesterday and the injuries he has sustained. My thoughts and prayers are with Shatts for a full and speedy recovery and with his family during this time.”
Shattock’s AFL career was marked by significant milestones; he played 68 games for Brisbane and Port Adelaide, including key moments such as the Lions’ grand final victory against Collingwood in 2002. He started his AFL career with the Lions after being drafted from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens. His time at Brisbane ended in 2004, after which he played for the Power before retiring from the sport at the end of the 2006 season. Following his retirement, Shattock transitioned to life as a builder, settling down on the Gold Coast where this unfortunate accident took place.
The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the excavator rollover. Meanwhile, the Shattock family has requested privacy during this extremely difficult time. They are said to be by his side as he fights for recovery.
This shocking incident serves as a sombre reminder of the risks associated with heavy machinery and the importance of safety protocols, especially within personal and professional environments. The AFL community, bolstered by Shattock's legacy as both player and mentor, is rallying together to support him through this challenging ordeal.
