A Community Celebration Of Health And Fun With Bingo

Events across Delaware County invite participation, from bingo nights to health programs for seniors.

The Knights of Columbus Mater Dei Council #4129 is excited to invite the community to an evening of bingo and comedy on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Cardinal O’Hara High School. The doors will open at 6 p.m., leading into a fun-filled event starting at 7 p.m. The evening will feature the comedic talents of Greg Martiello, promising laughter and entertainment as attendees enjoy playing their favorite game.

Tickets for this delightful event include ten bingo games, each allowing participants three cards per game. Additional games will be available, and daubers can be purchased at registration. Snacks and soft drinks will be on sale, but attendees can also bring their own beverages or order from local sponsor restaurants to make the night even more enjoyable. Notably, proceeds from the evening will benefit various charitable initiatives supported by the Knights.

In addition to this community event, a valuable opportunity entitled Steps to Healthy Living is set to begin for adults age 60 or older who are living with chronic health conditions. This Chronic Disease Self-Management Program will meet virtually on Zoom starting April 7, 2025, and run weekly through May 12, 2025. The program is designed to empower older adults living with chronic conditions, focusing on skills necessary for enhancing their day-to-day well-being. Participants will gain insights and support in managing their health effectively. Best of all, the program is provided at no charge.

The Arthritis Foundation is also rolling out a program aimed at seniors, the Walk with Ease initiative. This initiative kicks off on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, and runs every Tuesday for six weeks until April 29, 2025. Participants can join together at the 20th Century Club, located at 84 S. Lansdowne Ave., Lansdowne, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This free initiative encourages seniors to walk together and maintain a healthy lifestyle, while participants will also receive a Walk with Ease Guide Book.

In the spirit of community fundraising, the Delaware County Special Olympics will be hosting their bingo night on March 28, 2025, at the Brookhaven Community Center. Starting at 6 p.m., the event will include ten games with gift card prizes available. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Moreover, Joseph Dreams Inc. will hold a free diabetes self-management program launching on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 10 a.m. This workshop, conducted at the Friends Meeting House in Chester, will be beneficial for individuals at risk of diabetes and those already living with the condition. The small group format will foster an interactive learning environment over the course of six weeks to enhance self-efficacy in managing diabetes.

Additionally, people who are aged 60 and older and living with HIV are encouraged to take part in a free six-week workshop starting April 8, 2025. Running through May 13, 2025, on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. via Zoom, this program seeks to empower older adults through education and community support as they navigate their health journeys while managing chronic conditions, fostering skills necessary for self-advocacy.

For those in need of emotional and social support, Al-Anon holds weekly meetings every Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 356 Summit Road, Springfield. This initiative offers solace and connection for individuals dealing with the impact of a loved one's drinking problem.

In the realm of education, Penn-Delco School District has opened kindergarten and new student registrations for the 2025-2026 school year. Eligible children must be five years old before September 1, 2025. The district proudly continues to provide a full-day kindergarten program, fostering a strong foundation for young learners. On the other hand, the Wallingford-Swarthmore school district has likewise opened its kindergarten registrations with a similar cutoff date for eligibility.

Various trips and activities are planned as well: the Upper Chichester Senior Citizens Club will make trips to the Flight 93 Memorial and tour the famous Fallingwater house on September 23, while plan a ride on Lehigh Gorge Railroad on October 23. The cost for these excursions are $175 and $170, respectively, with additional trips planned to Windcreek Casino and a number of entertainment shows throughout the year.

In Middletown Township, an exciting trip to Washington D.C. is scheduled for March 29, and plans are also underway for a trip to New York City on April 12. These trips offer a budget-friendly way for residents to experience regional attractions, each costs $75 per person, ensuring an enriching day of fun and exploration.

For fans of entertainment, the Briarcliffe Seniors Club has organized several delightful excursions to Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, including upcoming events featuring tribute shows of legendary artists. All these trips aim to promote social engagement while providing enjoyable experiences within the community.

The Italian Cultural Center has stepped up its outreach efforts, and volunteers are needed to assist during summer visiting hours. This cultural gem located in Tinicum Township continues to welcome visitors, sharing the rich heritage of the Italian community in Delaware Valley.

Community involvement remains crucial, as groups like the Nar-Anon Family Group continue to offer resources and support for individuals affected by addiction every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Brookhaven Municipal Center.

Lastly, the Delaware County Victim Assistance Center has been a beacon of support for victims of sexual assault since its inception in 1974. They rely heavily on volunteers to provide necessary assistance and support to their clients 24 hours a day.
