85 Confirmed Dead After Muan Airport Plane Crash

Rescue efforts underway as survivors remain critically injured after the Jeju Air disaster.

On December 29, 2023, tragedy struck Muan International Airport in South Korea when Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 crashed shortly before landing, killing at least 85 individuals and leaving emergency crews racing against time to rescue survivors. The aircraft, which was carrying 175 passengers and 6 crew members, was arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, when it went off the runway and collided with airport barriers.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:03 AM local time, and by midday, reports indicated grim expectations for the remaining passengers, with only two individuals—a male and female crew member—reported to have survived, albeit with severe injuries.

Witnesses and officials described harrowing scenes as the Boeing 737-800 burst spectacularly, flames shooting from the fuselage as rescuers began their emergency operations. Lee Hyeon-ji, who leads the firefighting team responding to the disaster, noted, "We have confirmed the death of 85 people, but the toll may rise due to the severity of injuries." It is feared almost all aboard may not have survived.

Initial examinations pointed to potential mechanical failure of the landing gear, which remained retracted during the descent, leading to the aircraft losing control and crashing. Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations suggested adverse weather and possible bird strikes as contributing factors. "Conditions were adverse, and there are questions around the 'bird strike' events," said unnamed aviation experts quoted by Corriere.

The sequence of events leading to the tragedy has raised various questions among aviation specialists. Aircraft commanders expressed skepticism about how the plane was unable to deploy its landing gear. "It's really hard to land this type of jet deliberately with the gear not deployed," they explained. This raises concerns about whether the pilots were aware of the malfunction and whether they took appropriate countermeasures.

Active monitoring of the flight just before the accident showed the aircraft approaching the runway without visible issues, as noted by local sources: "The indicators show the plane was aiming straight for the Muan runway without apparent issues before the signal cut off." These discrepancies highlight the urgency for thorough investigations to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the crash.

Emergency services mobilized rapidly. Within minutes of the incident, over 30 fire trucks, along with countless responders, attempted to extinguish the flames and retrieve passengers trapped inside. The scene was chaotic, with responders facing intense conditions sparked by the blaze and wreckage. Despite their best efforts, they could only recover the two survivors, as comments from firefighters revealed.

Video footage captured just prior to the landing reveals the moment when one of the aircraft's engines emitted flames typically noted during bird strikes. "The right engine emitted quick flames, which seem typical of 'bird strike' incidents," reported the South Korean broadcaster MBC. This footage suggests there might have been more technical issues present leading up to the aircraft's ill-fated landing.

The loss of life from this incident is poignant, especially as the vast majority of those onboard were South Korean citizens. Local communities are still grappling with the tragic news as families anxiously await updates on their loved ones. The incident's fallout extends beyond personal tragedies, shining light on the need for enhanced aviation safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

Therefore, as South Korea reels from this devastating event, the interim President Sung-mok convened emergency talks to address the situation and assess responses moving forward. Investigations are expected to take center stage as the government seeks answers concerning the circumstances leading to this crash and to ascertain how to safeguard against future aviation disasters.

Reports will continue to emerge as the situation develops, keeping the affected families and society at large informed on the progress of investigations and recovery efforts.
