77-Year-Old Driver Arrested After Tokyo Hit-and-Run

A woman’s tragic death prompts calls for improved road safety measures.

A tragic hit-and-run incident unfolded early on February 14, 2023, on the streets of Tokyo, culminating in the death of a woman and the swift arrest of the taxi driver involved. The incident occurred at around 3:30 AM on the crosswalk along Nikkō Street, located in the Arakawa district.

The victim, described as a woman in her 50s, was discovered bleeding from the head on the crosswalk. She was immediately transported to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. The police launched an investigation and soon identified the suspect, 77-year-old Yoshiji Itoh, who lived in Soka City, Saitama Prefecture.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, eyewitness accounts played a significant role in piecing together the events of the incident. Evidence gathered at the scene, including hair believed to be from the victim found on the taxi and footage from the vehicle's dashboard camera, helped pinpoint Itoh as the driver. Authorities confirmed he was carrying passengers at the time of the incident.

During questioning, Itoh reportedly stated, "I felt something contact the vehicle, but I did not realize I had hit a person." His claim highlights the complex dynamics of such incidents, where alleged lack of awareness can lead to devastating consequences.

Residents of the area have expressed shock and sadness over the incident. Many are calling for stricter road safety measures to prevent such tragic events. The location where the incident occurred is described as a straight road, approximately 150 meters north of Minowa Station along the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, surrounded by residential buildings and eateries. This raises questions about nighttime pedestrian safety, especially for vulnerable populations.

The police continue to investigate the precise circumstances leading to the woman's death as they work to confirm her identity. Meanwhile, discussions around the accountability of drivers, especially elder ones, are gaining traction, with advocates urging for more rigorous testing and safety regulations.

This fatal accident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the responsibilities held by drivers on the road. It has re-ignited debates about pedestrian safety, particularly as urban centers like Tokyo grapple with balancing traffic flow and the safety of those on foot.

More reviews and initiatives from the city to promote road safety may follow as the investigation proceeds. Ensuring the safety of pedestrians, especially during late hours, should be a collective priority. One can only hope for reform and increased awareness to prevent such heart-wrenching tragedies from recurring.
