3FM Serious Request has once again kicked off its annual charity campaign, dedicated to raising funds for children suffering from metabolic diseases. At 4:45 PM on December 18, 2024, DJs Barend van Deelen, Sophie Hijlkema, and Wijnand Speelman were locked inside the iconic Glass House at Rodetorenplein, Zwolle. This year’s theme centers around Metakids, the organization striving for advancements in treatments for children plagued by metabolic disorders.
The launching ceremony featured Mayor Peter Snijders, who symbolically handed the key to the house to children facing these challenging health issues. They together closed the door behind the DJs, officially marking the start of this weekend-long activity. The event aims to gather support through 24-hour live radio broadcasts, all week until Christmas Eve.
Jelte, age four, is one of the faces of this year’s campaign, representing the urgency of the cause as he bravely faces his own metabolic condition. The D.Haan family has been remarkably open about their struggles, believing it is important to share their story for greater awareness and potential funding for treatment advancements. "Gelukkig hadden we noodmedicatie in huis, anders hadden we een ritje naar het ziekenhuis moeten maken," said Jelte’s mother, Sanne, illustrating the precariousness of her son’s health (Original quote in Dutch: "Gelukkig hadden we noodmedicatie in huis, anders hadden we een ritje naar het ziekenhuis moeten maken.").
Metabolic diseases are significantly underrepresented, with various forms impacting approximately 10,000 families across the Netherlands. Tragically, one out of every four children diagnosed does not survive past their 18th birthday. According to Sanne De Haan, "Als we genoeg geld ophalen, is 50 procent van de kinderen met een metabole ziekte behandelbaar," pointing to the pressing need for funds to improve treatment options (Original quote in Dutch: "Als we genoeg geld ophalen, is 50 procent van de kinderen met een metabole ziekte behandelbaar.").
Throughout the week, the DJs will not only be broadcasting live but are also aiming to connect with the community, asking listeners to donate through song requests, auctions, or direct contributions. Live performances are set to feature fan-favorite artists, drawing crowds to the Glass House. Notable performances include acts from Oscar and the Wolf, Franz Ferdinand, and RONDÉ, among others, scheduled to adorn the stage.
The DJs, with their witty banter and enthusiasm, create a welcoming atmosphere inviting people to visit the Glass House. Hundreds are expected to participate not only by donating but also by enjoying the live music. "Dit is een heel bijzondere dag," reflected Jelte's dad, Hein, acknowledging the importance of the moment for their family and the fundraising efforts at large (Original quote in Dutch: "Dit is een heel bijzondere dag.").
Additional initiatives surrounding the event include Rob's Afterparty, which promises nightly festivities alongside various fundraising activities. Offering attendees the chance to enjoy regional nightlife, all proceeds from the entrance fee will contribute to the overall gathering for Metakids.
3FM Serious Request is also embracing modern technology by providing multiple viewing and listening options. Fans can tune in 24/7 via radio and television and even catch updates via social media. Recent additions include the Social Room where influencers engage with audiences online, providing updates and channeling their excitement about the action happening inside the Glass House.
All week long, donations can also be made through the website, allowing those unable to attend physically to contribute meaningfully. Guests visiting the Hart voor Elkaar-plein near the Glass House are also welcomed to participate, sharing their enthusiasm and raising funds collectively.
Three DJs are determined to fulfill their commitment, locking themselves away for this noble cause, embodying the spirit of giving and community effort right before the holidays. Their dedication aligns beautifully with the philosophy behind Serious Request, which has consistently aimed to shine light on lesser-known health battles since its inception back in 2004.
With exciting programming against the backdrop of personal stories like Jelte’s inspiration, the week promises to not only raise funds but also awareness about health issues affecting children today. The final night, Christmas Eve, culminates with the live donation reveal, marking the event’s grand conclusion.
This year will undoubtedly continue the tradition with more heartfelt stories, engaging community participation, and the hope of transformative medical advancements for those brave little fighters.
