The 2023 edition of 3FM Serious Request officially kicked off today, with well-known DJs Wijnand Speelman, Sophie Hijlkema, and Barend van Deelen locked inside the iconic Glazen Huis located at the Rodetorenplein in Zwolle. The ceremonial start of this fundraising event took place at 4:45 PM when Mayor Peter Snijders handed over the key to the house to children suffering from metabolic diseases, who then locked the DJs inside. This year's theme song, "I Believe in Love" was performed by Rondé, setting the emotional tone for the week-long campaign.
3FM Serious Request is dedicated to raising funds for Metakids, an organization focused on research for metabolic diseases, which are among the most deadly afflictions affecting children today. These diseases arise from congenital errors in the body's metabolism, significantly hindering normal bodily functions and often resulting in grave health complications. Disturbingly, one out of four children afflicted with these diseases does not reach adulthood, highlighting the urgent need for medical advancements.
The DJs aim to raise money through innovative fundraising methods such as playing song requests for donations. For those unable to attend, there are numerous ways to contribute, from making donations to participating in charity auctions. Throughout the week, the Glazen Huis will be open to the public 24 hours a day, encouraging community involvement and support.
Local city manager Anne Riemersma expressed optimism about the event, stating, "Serious Request wanted to come to Zwolle for some time, and the entrepreneurs are thrilled it’s happening this year." This local engagement showcases how the community has embraced this important cause, particularly with 10% of students at De Twijn, a special education school, managing metabolic diseases.
Before the launch of Serious Request, over 1 million euros had already been raised for Metakids, thanks largely to initiatives such as Speelman's incredible dual marathon run, which alone brought in €214,861. The DJs are prohibited from eating during their time inside the Glazen Huis and will survive solely on juices, creating not only fundraising challenges but also personal sacrifices.
Music fans can look forward to performances throughout the week. Artists, including Kane, Franz Ferdinand, Oscar and the Wolf, and many more will take the stage, offering both entertainment and contributions to the cause. Each performance grows the community's involvement, encouraging donations, and spreading awareness about metabolic diseases.
Robs Afterparty, hosted by 3FM DJ Rob Janssen, will also add to the festivities, transforming Taboe Bar & Keuken on Gasthuisplein from December 18 to December 23. This covers the evenings of celebrations post-performances from 11:30 PM to 3:00 AM, requiring only a minimal entry fee, with all proceeds going directly to Serious Request.
The central message of 3FM Serious Request is not just about raising money; it's about fostering awareness and hope for children like Jelte, who at four years old, faces uncertain health outcomes due to his metabolic condition. His family exemplifies the personal stakes involved, celebrating monthly birthdays as they navigate this difficult reality.
Throughout the week, global communications will spotlight the campaign, including live updates on channels like NPO Start and NPO 3. This year introduces social media integration with influencers covering the event, amplifying the urgency and reach of the program's message.
On Christmas Eve, serious anticipation will culminate with the live reveal of the total funds raised. The efforts of 3FM Serious Request represent not only entertainment but also collective action against the backdrop of significant health challenges. The hope is to fuel breakthroughs for treatments, ensuring brighter futures for children affected by metabolic diseases.
With each song request, every donation, and every event, the community stands united behind 3FM Serious Request, rallying for change and progress. Will 2023 be the year where transformative strides are made for children battling these complex and dangerous conditions?
