The 2025 Winter Drama Season has officially arrived, sparking excitement among fans of Japanese television.

This year boasts a stunning ensemble of casts, well-known writers, and captivating stories, making it hard for drama enthusiasts to choose what to watch. Columnist Kobayashi Hisano of NHK offers her top five must-see series, claiming this lineup is not to be missed.

Date marks the official opening on January 9, 2025, with high expectations already surrounding several anticipated titles. For example, the series "Hot Spot," penned by Bakari Zumu and starring Minako Ichikawa, launches on January 12, enriching the canvas of winter drama with its engaging narrative.

Another fascinating entry is "Inheritance Detective," featuring the popular scriptwriter of the hit series "Spec - Special Investigations Unit," Yumi Nishio, again partnering with actor Kazuto Akaso. This series kicks off on January 25 and promises to thrill viewers with mysterious plot lines and intense performances.

One of the standout choices for Kobayashi is "Tokyo Salad Bowl" airing on NHK, which shifts focus to the theme of foreign crime. The series follows the life of police officer Mari Koudou, represented through nuanced performances by Naoko and Ryuuhei Matsuda. Kobayashi emphasizes how the characters' interactions and challenges against the backdrop of Japan's multicultural coexistence are set to captivate the audience.

"I can’t help but record the Tuesday series 'Tokyo Salad Bowl' with Naoko and Ryuuhei Matsuda as lead actors," Kobayashi mentioned, highlighting the compelling nature of the story.

On Thursdays, viewers can look forward to Katori Shingo's return to television, this time as the protagonist of "The Worst Man. My Family Is Fake". It portrays the comedic twists of his character's transition from being a news producer to aspiring politician. With Katori’s star power and previous hit shows under his belt, the audience's anticipation is high. "Katori Shingo is gracing the screen again after years with Fuji TV's 'The Worst Man.' I hope for compelling performances," Kobayashi noted.

Fans of heartfelt narratives will also be treated to the adaptation of the award-winning novel titled "Lila: The Blooming Beast Path," which premieres on February 1. Set against the scenic backdrop of Hokkaido, this poignant series is sure to resonate, featuring actors Yamada Anna, Tamaki Aimi, and Risuke Hagiwara as veterinary students pursuing their dreams among the captivating scenery.

"The theme song, 'Tsukushi,' will accompany the story beautifully," said singer Nishina during its promotional phase.

Kobayashi insists this winter lineup will not only entertain audiences but also explore valuable cultural narratives and themes across Japan’s diverse society.

With this mix of genres and themes, from thrillers to heartfelt stories, the 2025 Winter Drama Season promises to beckon audiences back to their screens, eager to witness top-notch performances and compelling storytelling.
