2025 Dakar Rally: Teams Prepare For Epic Challenge

Factory teams gear up with new innovations as excitement builds for the world’s toughest rally.

The 2025 Dakar Rally is fast approaching and anticipation is building as participants finalize their preparations for this iconic event. Set to run from January 3 to January 17, 2025, the rally promises to once again test the limits of endurance and skill across the treacherous terrains of Saudi Arabia.

This year, several top factory teams are gearing up to compete, including big names like Honda, KTM, and Hero MotoSports. Honda, often referred to as the ‘red armada’, aims to retain its championship with its five-member team, led by defending champion Ricky Brabec. Alongside Brabec are accomplished riders such as Pablo Quintanilla, Skyler Howes, Adrien Van Beveren, and newcomer Tosha Schareina. The Honda team remains one of the strongest contenders this year, poised to continue its dominance.

KTM, historically the most successful team with numerous victories, is entering the Dakar with hopes to reclaim the title. The team consists of three skilled riders: Daniel Sanders, Kevin Benavides, and Luciano Benavides. Although facing challenges from the absence of Husqvarna and Gas Gas, KTM is determined to bring home the crown once more.

Hero MotoSports is also eager to make its mark following last year’s success. Ross Branch, known as the ‘Kalahari Ferrari’, will lead the three-member team after finishing second in the last rally. He will be joined by Sebastian Buhler and ex-Honda rider Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo, aiming for podium places once again.

New entries such as the Fantic team look promising, with seven members including Tommaso Montanari and Sandra Gomez, ready to challenge for top positions. The Sherco team, led by Lorenzo Santolino, aims to build on its consistent performances, hoping to secure its first win following years of near-misses.

On the four-wheeled front, former motorcycle champion Danilo Petrucci is gearing up for his second Dakar Rally, transitioning from two wheels to the truck category. Petrucci will race for the Italtrans team alongside Claudio Bellina and Marco Arnoletti, showcasing the evolution of his racing career. The excitement surrounding his participation is palpable, marked by his determination to excel and learn from this challenging environment.

Meanwhile, Ford is making waves with its new Raptor T1+, developed jointly with M-Sport. With conference winners such as Carlos Sainz Sr., Nani Roma, and future star Mattias Ekstrom behind the wheel, the Raptor T1+ features advanced specs, including the Coyote V8 engine and rugged suspension systems capable of withstanding the desert's grueling conditions.

The Ford vehicle emphasizes both durability and performance; it weighs 2,010 kilograms and is equipped with sophisticated FOX shock absorbers and adjustable systems for optimal control. The engineering prowess behind this vehicle will be put to the test across the intense Dakar stages.

Strategic innovation is not just confined to vehicle design but also includes new race formats. The introduction of the 48-hour Chrono stage will demand unique strategies, requiring participants to camp overnight with no access to team support. Sainz, the reigning champion, highlights the importance of preparation, stating, “These days, I'm dedicting more time to aerobic training.” This stage is particularly important for teams with new setups, adding layers of complexity.

Toby Price, another notable competitor, shares his excitement about the Dakar. Having transitioned from motorcycles to cars, Price is set to drive the Toyota HiLux T1+ with Sam Sunderland as navigator. Price is known for his remarkable resilience, having won the Dakar twice under challenging circumstances and overcoming significant injuries throughout his racing career.

Preparations for the rally extend beyond just racing cars and motorcycles. Teams focus on physical fitness and mental readiness, reflecting the demanding nature of the event. “We have been flat out getting everything together for Dakar,” Price shared, emphasizing the intensity of the lead-up to the competition.

Finally, the 2025 Dakar Rally is not just about personal glory; it’s also about showcasing teamwork, strategy, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. The combination of seasoned champions and new entrants promises to create thrilling competition as the world’s toughest rally raid commences. Expect to see innovative technologies battling the harshest of conditions, and drivers pushing their limits across the vast Saudi deserts.

Whether it’s on two wheels or four, the excitement for this iconic event continues to build. Anticipation is tangible as teams prepare for what promises to be another historic rally, where every second counts and the thrill of off-road racing takes center stage.
