2024 Dutch Tax Filing Season Opens With Free Assistance

Taxpayers can access support from the Belastingdienst and community resources throughout the tax season.

Tax season is upon us once again, with some 9.4 million people invited to file their income tax returns for 2024. This group comprises 6.9 million individuals and 2.5 million entrepreneurs who need to get their paperwork done before the deadline of May 1, 2025. The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) has paved the way for taxpayer support through various initiatives, ensuring residents have the help they need to navigate the process effectively.

This year, the administration has made it clear: assistance is available for all. Recent studies indicate nearly 30% of the public expresses some difficulty with filling out tax returns, and only 6% are aware of the appointment options at the tax service. "Soms verandert er iets in het leven van mensen, zoals een huwelijk of scheiding, het kopen van een huis of het starten van een onderneming," said Steef Cobben, manager of income tax at the Belastingdienst. He emphasized, "Especially in these cases, we see errors happening and individuals needing guidance with their income tax filings. Our team is geared up to assist during this busy period."

Taxpayers have several channels through which they can seek help. This encompasses face-to-face consultations at the Belastingdienst counters, utilizing online checklists, and even receiving guidance from younger relatives, as humorously depicted by ads promoting the filing process. The effort to streamline the tax return system is apparent, with many data elements like income and mortgage details already pre-filled, allowing individuals to minimize errors and streamline their filings.

To facilitate even greater access to tax resources, the Belastingdienst will deploy its mobile Tax Bus from March 5 through several municipalities. The bus will travel to towns like Middelburg, Haarlem, and Maastricht, providing general inquiries and resources without the need for appointments. This initiative aims to reach out directly to citizens, making the Tax Office’s resources accessible to those who may not venture to their offices otherwise, and serves as another reminder of the varied support systems available to taxpayers.

The Tax Bus will take the following route:

  • March 5, 2025 – Middelburg – De Markt

  • March 6, 2025 – Bergen op Zoom – Grote Markt

  • March 7, 2025 – Helmond – De Markt

  • March 10, 2025 – Haarlem – Stationsplein

  • March 12, 2025 – Leiden – Beestenmarkt

  • March 13, 2025 – Den Haag – De Grotemarktstraat

  • March 14, 2025 – Gouda – Hoogstraat

  • March 19, 2025 – Winterswijk – Warenmarkt

  • March 20, 2025 – Apeldoorn – Raadhuisplein

  • March 22, 2025 – Maastricht – De Markt

  • March 26, 2025 – Lelystad – Stadhuisplein

  • March 27, 2025 – Eindhoven – 18 Septemberplein

  • March 28, 2025 – Leeuwarden – De Lange Pijp

  • March 29, 2025 – Emmen – Marktplein

Beyond the Tax Bus initiative, various local organizations and libraries are also stepping up to support residents. For example, the Hof van Twente Library will again collaborate with Salut to offer tax advice services. This service will feature knowledgeable volunteers ready to provide assistance and clarification on tax filing and benefit applications.

The tax aid service operates on prior appointment only, indicating the need for individuals to call the dedicated number to schedule their sessions, which come at a nominal fee of €15. Expert volunteers are prepared to cover inquiries related to the specifics of individual tax situations and any additional benefits they may wish to claim.

The support services will be available throughout March and April, commencing on March 5, with sessions held on various days and times across different locations including Goor and Delden. During this period, it is strongly encouraged for taxpayers to seek available assistance with any uncertainties they may have. Making full use of these resources could save many individuals from making potential mistakes on their returns.

The officially designated period for tax filing runs until May 1, and taxpayers are reminded they can request extensions if they cannot complete their filings by the deadline. Last year, during March and April, the Belastingdienst recorded a staggering 10.3 million tax returns being filed, emphasizing the importance of timely assistance.

With the avenues available for support, taxpayers are advised to take proactive measures if they need help. Whether reaching out to the official Belastingdienst resources or engaging with local community services, assistance is readily available to make the 2024 tax filing experience smooth and manageable.

For those still unsure how to proceed or which resources to tap, exploring the various platforms, from tax office counters to social media interaction, is recommended. Everybody is encouraged to check the official Tax Office website for updates on the services available and for tips on ensuring their tax filings are error-free and submitted on time.
