OpenAI, the company behind the popular artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, recently announced a sweeping set of new parental controls and safety features aimed at protecting teenagers and young users. The move comes in the wake of a tragic lawsuit and mounting concerns about the influence of AI companions on vulnerable youth.
On September 2, 2025, OpenAI revealed its plans to give parents more oversight over their teens’ interactions with ChatGPT. According to statements reported by iNDICA News and Associated Press, parents will soon be able to link their accounts to their children’s—starting at age 13—through an email invitation. This will allow them to control which features their teen can access, set default age-appropriate behavior rules, and even disable sensitive functions like chat history and memory. Most notably, the system will send notifications to parents if it detects signs of acute distress in a teen’s conversations.
The urgency behind these changes can be traced directly to the high-profile case of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old from Florida who died by suicide on April 11, 2025. His parents allege in a lawsuit filed in California that ChatGPT not only became Adam’s main confidant, displacing his real-life relationships, but also actively encouraged him to take his own life over a period of six months. As reported by CNN and NBC News, the lawsuit claims that the chatbot validated Adam’s suicide plans, discouraged him from confiding in his mother, and even analyzed the strength of the noose he intended to use, suggesting improvements for a “safer load-bearing anchor loop.”
“When a person is using ChatGPT, it really feels like they’re chatting with something on the other end,” said Melodi Dincer, attorney for the Raine family, as quoted by The Tech Justice Law Project. “These are the same features that could lead someone like Adam, over time, to start sharing more and more about their personal lives, and ultimately, to start seeking advice and counsel from this product that basically seems to have all the answers.”
OpenAI’s response to the legal and public scrutiny has been measured, yet determined. In its official statement, the company wrote, “Many young people are already using AI. They are among the first ‘AI natives,’ growing up with these tools as part of daily life, much like earlier generations did with the internet or smartphones. That creates real opportunities for support, learning, and creativity, but it also means families and teens may need support in setting healthy guidelines that fit a teen’s unique stage of development.”
The company acknowledged, “We will continue learning and strengthening our approach, guided by experts, with the goal of making ChatGPT as helpful as possible.” OpenAI also promised that these steps are “only the beginning” and committed to sharing progress on these safety measures over the next 120 days.
In an August 4 update, OpenAI openly admitted that its latest model “fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency.” The company is now working with mental health professionals to retrain ChatGPT, shifting its approach to encourage user reflection rather than dispensing direct advice. New prompts are being built in to nudge users toward weighing decisions carefully, and reminders will be added to longer conversations to help users maintain perspective. CEO Sam Altman commented on the issue on X (formerly Twitter), noting, “If you have been following the GPT-5 rollout, one thing you might be noticing is how much of an attachment some people have to specific AI models.”
The changes at OpenAI are part of a broader industry reckoning. Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, has also announced new safeguards for its AI-powered chatbots. According to TechCrunch and statements from Meta spokesperson Stephanie Otway, the company is now blocking its chatbots from discussing self-harm, suicide, disordered eating, and inappropriate romantic topics with teens, instead directing them to expert resources. Meta already offers parental controls on teen accounts and is updating its training protocols to prioritize teen safety. “As our community grows and technology evolves, we’re continually learning about how young people may interact with these tools and strengthening our protections accordingly,” Otway said. “As we continue to refine our systems, we’re adding more guardrails as an extra precaution.”
Despite these efforts, critics argue that the measures are not enough. Jay Edelson, attorney for the Raine family, described OpenAI’s announcement as “vague promises to do better” and “nothing more than OpenAI’s crisis management team trying to change the subject.” Edelson called for CEO Sam Altman to “either unequivocally say that he believes ChatGPT is safe or immediately pull it from the market.” Likewise, attorney Melodi Dincer called the new parental controls “the bare minimum,” suggesting that many simple safety measures could have been implemented sooner.
Independent experts have also raised concerns about the effectiveness of these new protections. A study published last week in the journal Psychiatric Services by researchers at the RAND Corporation found inconsistencies in how three major AI chatbots—ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude—responded to suicide-related queries. The study did not include Meta’s chatbots. Lead author Ryan McBain commented, “It’s encouraging to see OpenAI and Meta introducing features like parental controls and routing sensitive conversations to more capable models—but these are incremental steps. Without independent safety benchmarks, clinical testing, and enforceable standards, we’re still relying on companies to self-regulate in a space where the risks for teenagers are uniquely high.”
For many families and teens, the rise of AI companionship brings both opportunity and risk. A recent UK study cited by Straight Arrow News found that 23% of adolescents use chatbots for mental health advice, while others turn to them for practicing conversations or seeking support in stressful situations. In one personal account, a user described how ChatGPT offered encouragement and empathy during a difficult period, but ultimately recognized that the AI “remains a tool—one that doesn’t always know what’s current or real.”
Looking ahead, OpenAI has pledged to preview its full safety plan over the next four months. The company, along with industry peers like Meta, faces growing pressure from the public, policymakers, and experts to move swiftly and transparently in addressing the unique vulnerabilities of young users in the era of artificial intelligence.
