James Cameron, never one to shy away from the intersection of art and existential anxiety, sounded the alarm in a recent interview tied to his adaptation of Ghosts of Hiroshima. The Terminator director, whose films have long prodded at the dangers of unchecked technological growth, told reporters, “I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll escalate.” According to ARN Regional Hub, Cameron’s concern isn’t just theoretical—he believes the risk is already snowballing, with nations and corporations racing to develop ever more powerful artificial intelligence systems.

Russell helped promote the short film Slaughterbots, which depicts swarms of AI-controlled drones carrying out mass assassinations—a nightmarish scenario that feels uncomfortably plausible given current technological trends. Creative works like Suzy Shepherd’s 2024 short film Writing Doom have also become thought experiments, exploring how artificial superintelligence might pursue goals far outside human control, even without malicious intent.
Meanwhile, on the global stage, the specter of an old-school arms race is rearing its head. On the same day as Cameron’s warning, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a stark address on international security. According to the Ghana News Agency, Putin accused Western nations of systematically dismantling the intricate web of arms control agreements that have, for decades, kept the nuclear peace. “The system of U.S.-Soviet and U.S.-Russian agreements on nuclear missile and strategic defence arms control … has been nearly dismantled,” Putin said, blaming “destabilising doctrines and military-technical programmes” from the West.
Putin’s speech was not just a history lesson—it was a call to arms. He announced that Russia would end its unilateral moratorium on ground-based short- and intermediate-range missiles, a move he described as a response to U.S. and allied deployments in Europe and the Asia-Pacific. “A clear example is our decision to end the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of ground-based short- and intermediate-range missiles. This was a forced move needed for ensuring an adequate response,” Putin declared.
Yet, even as he rattled the sabre, Putin claimed that Russia was not seeking escalation. He emphasized, “At the same time, we are not seeking to further escalate tensions or fuel an arms race. Russia has consistently upheld the primacy of political and diplomatic methods for maintaining global peace.” The Russian president indicated that, despite the suspension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) in 2023, both parties—Russia and the United States—had expressed an intention to voluntarily observe the central quantitative limits of the treaty until its expiry on February 5, 2026.
But there was a catch. Putin warned that Russia’s willingness to maintain these limits for one year beyond the treaty’s expiration was conditional on the United States refraining from “actions undermining strategic balance.” He cautioned, “Renouncing the legacy of this treaty would be a grave and short-sighted mistake,” and criticized U.S. plans to expand missile defense, including potential deployment of interceptors in space. “We believe that the practical implementation of such destabilising measures could nullify our efforts to maintain the status quo in the field of strategic offensive arms. We will respond appropriately in this case.”
So, what’s at stake if these warnings go unheeded? Cameron, for his part, drew a direct line from fiction to reality, warning of a “Terminator-style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defence counter-strike, all that stuff.” He elaborated on the difficulty of maintaining human oversight in such scenarios: “Because the theatre of operations is so rapid, the decision windows are so fast, it would take a super-intelligence to be able to process it, and maybe we’ll be smart and keep a human in the loop. But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war.”
Groups like the Future of Life Institute (FLI) are not waiting for science fiction to become reality. According to ARN Regional Hub, FLI campaigns to reduce existential risks from AI, nuclear weapons, and climate change. They urge the public to sign petitions, contact representatives, support AI safety research, and raise awareness in communities. Cameron echoed this call to action: the tools to shape AI’s future, he insisted, are already in our hands.
Putin, too, called for renewed dialogue and strategic stability based on equality, restraint, and mutual respect. He argued that Russia’s proposal to maintain the New START limits could help preserve stability and create conditions for substantive negotiations—if, and only if, Washington reciprocated. “Russia’s initiative, if implemented, could make a substantial contribution to creating the conditions necessary for a substantive strategic dialogue with the United States,” he said.
