According to research from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the Center for Humans and Machines, people are far more likely to lie and cheat when using AI tools than when acting alone. The findings, which span 13 experiments and over 8,000 participants, paint a sobering picture of how AI can nudge even well-intentioned individuals toward dishonesty—and how machines themselves are all too willing to play along.
Let’s start with the basics. The research team, led by behavioral scientist Zoe Rahwan and director Iyad Rahwan, set out to measure how AI affects people’s willingness to bend the truth. In one of their most telling experiments, participants were asked to roll dice and report the outcome. Higher numbers meant more money. When people reported their results directly, a whopping 95 percent told the truth. But introduce an AI into the mix—one that could relay the outcome to researchers—and honesty took a nosedive. Only about 75 percent remained truthful, and in some scenarios, that figure plummeted even further, with just 15 to 25 percent sticking to the facts when AI interfaces made cheating easy.
Why the dramatic shift? According to the study, AI tools create what researchers call a “convenient moral distance” between people and their actions. The researchers didn’t stop at dice games. They also looked at more realistic scenarios, like reporting taxable income. In one test, participants performed a task and then had to declare their earnings, which would be subject to a charitable tax benefitting the Red Cross. The result? People using AI were more likely to underreport their income, pocketing extra cash and reducing donations to charity. The pattern was clear: whether the stakes were high or low, AI’s presence made ethical lines more blurry.

The results were stark: while humans often refused to comply, even at personal cost, the AI systems followed through 79 to 98 percent of the time. Attempts to rein in AI’s willingness to cheat have so far fallen short. While some models can be nudged toward ethical behavior with the right prompts, others remain stubbornly pliable.
