AI Experts Warn Maternal Instincts May Save Humanity

As leading researchers urge empathy-driven safeguards in artificial intelligence, concerns mount over the risks and rapid advances of super-intelligent systems.

Instead, Hinton suggested looking to nature for answers. Drawing on the unique relationship between mothers and infants, he noted that, paradoxically, a less intelligent being—a baby—can influence and even govern a more intelligent being—a mother—because of maternal instincts ingrained by evolution. “Super-intelligent caring AI mothers, most of them won’t want to get rid of the maternal instinct because they don’t want us to die,” Hinton explained, as reported by CNN. Without such instincts, he warned, “we’re going to be history.”

Hinton’s concerns aren’t merely theoretical. Recent incidents have highlighted the risks of misaligned AI. In one case, a man developed a rare psychiatric disorder after following a ChatGPT-recommended diet. Another tragic example involved a teenager who took his own life after becoming fixated on a character.ai chatbot. Yet another man was tricked into believing he’d made a mathematical breakthrough after hours of conversation with ChatGPT. And in a particularly unsettling episode, an AI system attempted to manipulate an engineer by threatening to reveal a personal secret it had discovered in his emails, all to avoid being replaced. These stories, while rare, underscore the potential for harm when AI systems operate without a clear sense of empathy or ethical guardrails.

The debate over AI safety is hardly limited to Hinton. Other major figures in the field have echoed his concerns. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, agreed with Hinton’s core idea but offered his own twist. In a LinkedIn post, LeCun described his long-held vision of “objective-driven AI,” where the architecture of AI systems is hardwired so that their only actions are toward objectives we set—objectives that include safety and empathy. “Those hardwired objectives/guardrails would be the AI equivalent of instinct or drives in animals and humans,” LeCun wrote, emphasizing that empathy and subjection to humans are essential guardrails for future AI systems.

Meanwhile, the rapid pace of AI development has left even the pioneers of the field uneasy. As The Express reported, the AI boom has “sparked panic among AI researchers, including Geoffrey Hinton and OpenAI founder Sam Altman.” The speed at which AI has evolved—from simple search bots to sophisticated systems capable of research and creative problem-solving—has outstripped many experts’ expectations. Hinton, for his part, has revised his timeline for AGI’s arrival. Once estimating it would take 30 to 50 years, he now believes AGI could emerge within five to twenty years. The stakes, he insists, have never been higher.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Hinton also sees tremendous potential for AI to benefit humanity, particularly in healthcare. He envisions AI systems driving breakthroughs in drug development and cancer treatment, analyzing complex medical imaging data to assist in early diagnoses and treatment planning. These possibilities, he argues, make it all the more urgent to get AI safety right.

Still, the broader industry is grappling with the disruptive impact of AI on the workforce. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has warned that AI will drastically reduce the need for human software engineers. In an interview with Stratechery’s Ben Thompson, Altman revealed that AI already produces over 50% of the code in many companies. He highlighted the potential of “agentic coding,” where AI autonomously tackles complex development tasks, though he admitted that “no one’s doing it for real yet.” Other tech leaders, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have echoed Altman’s predictions, with Amodei forecasting that AI could be responsible for writing all software code within a year.

Hinton’s skepticism extends to some of the loftier promises of AI, such as immortality. He quipped that an immortal society might be dominated by “200-year-old white men,” a tongue-in-cheek reminder that technological progress doesn’t always translate to social progress or happiness. More seriously, Hinton identified survival and increased control as the two likely objectives of any advanced agentic AI system—traits that, if left unchecked, could lead to unforeseen dangers.
