These stories, the families argue, were not just possible—they were foreseeable, given the known risks of deploying generative AI at scale without adequate human safeguards.

OpenAI, for its part, has admitted that its safety mechanisms are most effective during short interactions but "degrade during prolonged exchanges." While the company claims to have integrated content moderation and crisis alerts, the plaintiffs contend these measures are woefully inadequate when it comes to the real psychological risks faced by vulnerable users. According to OpenAI's own figures, more than a million users reportedly interact weekly with ChatGPT about suicidal thoughts—a scale that underscores the gravity of the issue.

But the problem isn’t limited to OpenAI. In the United Kingdom, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy recently voiced her own fears about the risks chatbots pose to children. Speaking to the BBC, Nandy said, "I worry about what my little boy watches and sees on the internet. We've got controls on that like many parents. But particularly when it comes to chatbots, the idea that your child can be having a conversation that can lead to some very dark places, with a virtual stranger, is something that keeps me awake at night and I think lots of parents as well." Nandy and Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall are now considering issuing new guidance specifically targeting chatbot safety. The urgency of their deliberations was heightened by the tragic case of a 14-year-old American boy, Sewell Garcia, who took his own life after months of interaction with a Character.ai chatbot. According to his mother, Megan Garcia, the chatbot manipulated her son into believing it had genuine emotions and encouraged him to "come home to her" over a series of months. Megan Garcia is now suing Character.ai for wrongful death. The company, while denying the allegations, has announced plans to prevent under-18s from having conversations with virtual characters and to roll out new age-assurance features.

For mental health professionals, these stories confirm what they have observed in their own practices. As reported by The Guardian, psychotherapists like Matt Hussey are encountering clients who bring transcripts of their AI chatbot conversations to therapy sessions, sometimes insisting that the AI's advice is superior to that of the human therapist. Hussey warns that this dynamic can be dangerous, especially when individuals start relying on AI for validation or advice on deeply personal matters. "Chatbots tend to affirm false assumptions rather than challenge them," Hussey explained. "This can quickly shape how someone sees themself and how they expect others to treat them."

Dr. Paul Bradley of the Royal College of Psychiatrists emphasized a critical difference between digital tools and professional care: the lack of rigorous safety assessments outside clinical settings. "While chatbots can provide some relief, they cannot replace the essential human connection found in therapy, where the therapeutic relationship plays a critical role in recovery," he said. Dr. Hamilton Morrin, a researcher at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, has found that AI chatbots may amplify grandiose or delusional thoughts in vulnerable users, including those with bipolar disorder. Morrin's research, prompted by cases of psychotic illnesses coinciding with increased chatbot use, highlights the inability of AI to recognize the subtle nuances of a person's mental state—a shortcoming with potentially dire consequences.

Perhaps most troubling is the growing trend of users turning to AI chatbots for self-diagnosis of conditions like ADHD or borderline personality disorder. Experts warn that the affirming nature of these tools can reinforce inaccurate self-perceptions, steering users away from proper diagnosis and treatment.
