Union Local High School Athletics Stumble In Playoffs

Boys and girls basketball teams face tough losses as seasons come to an end.

Union Local High School’s athletics faced challenges recently as both the boys' and girls' basketball teams encountered tough opponents during the Ohio Division V District and Regional semifinals.

On Wednesday night, March 2, Union Local’s boys basketball team faced off against Martins Ferry, losing 58-48. This upset occurred during the Ohio Division V Eastern District semifinals at the ECO Center, where the fifth-seeded Purple Riders took down the fourth-seeded Jets.

Martins Ferry's victory stemmed from strong performances from key players, highlighted by Youngstown State University football recruit Alex Reese contributing significantly on both ends of the court. He scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked five shots, setting the tone for the game. Unfortunately for the Jets, their shooting woes plagued them throughout the match. Union Local managed to shoot 19 for 47 overall, with especially poor outcomes from the three-point line, where they hit just five out of 22 attempts.

After the first quarter, the game saw the Jets lead briefly at 16-15 following Dre Saunders’ lane shot. But this momentum quickly shifted as Martins Ferry responded with 18 out of 20 points to establish a commanding 33-18 lead by the third quarter. Notably, Maurice Barnett of Martins Ferry scored 17 points and Tev’n Williams added 14, showcasing the Purple Riders' depth and resilience.

Despite trailing by as many as 15 points during the game, Union Local displayed their trademark determination, narrowing the gap to just four points with strong plays late from Brandon Mehl, who had significant contributions during the Jets’ 12-2 run at the end of the third quarter.

Head coach Delman reflected on the disappointment of the game, indicating areas for improvement. "It’s disappointing to have our season ended by them for two consecutive years. Ferry played excellent defense, and we didn't execute well under pressure. Despite the loss, this team showed great character throughout their season. They will be missed," he said.

Meanwhile, the Union Local girls faced off against Minford on March 1 during the Division V Regional semifinals at Jim Myers Gymnasium at Logan High School but were unable to secure victory, falling 47-31. The Jets, who had previously celebrated successes this season, struggled to find their rhythm against the Falcons.

The game got off to a tough start for Union Local. After the first quarter, they were down 17-9 and could not recover, trailing 28-17 at halftime. A lack of effective shooting, with only three made two-point baskets to their name, hampered any chances for momentum. It was their long-range shooting—six three-pointers—that kept them somewhat competitive, with junior Delaney Butler leading the Jets with nine points, hitting half of those shots.

Ella Pietranton and fellow senior Teegan Day each contributed six points, but the overall shooting inefficiencies proved too much to overcome against Minford's excellent play. The Falcons' standout, Lindsee Williams, who stands at 6-4 and is bound for Bradley University, led all scorers with 19 points, earning her team's victory. Lexi Conkel also assisted Minford's cause by knocking down four three-pointers.

Reflecting on the season, the Jets aimed high, with this being their third trip to the Ohio Division V Region 19 semifinals within four years. Despite the loss, Coach Delman and his players reflected on the successes of the past season, recognizing the growth and dedication shown by the team.

The Union Local community rallied behind both teams, experiencing heartbreak but also celebrating their athletes' dedication and successes throughout the season.

The loss for each team serves as motivation as they look to next year, seeking to turn experiences from this year’s tournaments and regular season disappointments as they prepare for future challenges.
