Tropical Storm Garance is intensifying as it approaches Réunion Island, prompting local authorities to issue warnings and prepare for severe weather conditions. On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, residents were placed under orange cyclone alert as forecasts indicated the storm would escalate to hurricane strength, with impacts expected by Thursday night.
At approximately 370 kilometers northwest of Réunion Island, Garance is moving southeast at 9 km/h. By Thursday afternoon, it is anticipated to be within 50 to 70 kilometers of the island, carrying wind gusts exceeding 150 km/h, potentially classifying it as a strong tropical cyclone with winds over 166 km/h and gusts reaching 230 km/h.
Céline Jauffret, director of Météo France for the Indian Ocean, characterized the storm by stating, "Garance constitutes an important and serious threat," indicating the likelihood of direct impact on the island. The anticipated impacts include torrential rain and rough seas as the storm approaches.
Schools, colleges, and day care centers are already closed, and residents are being urged to prepare for worsening conditions. Patrice Latron, the préfet of Réunion, announced on Wednesday evening the transition to red alert status on Thursday, which mandates total confinement of residents except for emergency services. The heavy winds and potential flooding present significant risks, amplifying concern among the population.
The closure of local businesses and suspension of public transport services are also part of the emergency measures being enacted. Residents have been queuing at stores, purchasing essentials such as food, water, batteries, and candles, anticipating possible extended disruption due to the storm.
Historically, Réunion Island has faced multiple cyclone threats, with the cyclone Belal occurring just last year, causing four fatalities and damages amounting to 100 million euros. Cyclones Jenny (1962) and Colina (1993) also struck the island with severe consequences. The last cyclone warning, classified as violet, was recorded during the cyclone Belal event.
Despite the unpredictable nature of cyclones, meteorologists predict Garance may alter course, possibly impacting nearby Mauritius as well. The Mauritius airport has also been closed, responding to alerts as the cyclone approaches, with fears of compounded effects on both islands.
With impacts potentially reaching the heart of Réunion Island, authorities are intensifying preparations. The situation remains dynamic, and updates will continue as Météo France monitors Garance's development. Local officials stress the importance of vigilance and readiness for this serious weather event.
