TikTok Tests Landscape Videos Amid Intense Competition

The platform expands features to rival YouTube and attract more mature audiences while facing scrutiny over security concerns

TikTok, the social media platform that has taken the world by storm, is undergoing a significant transformation as it tests a new feature allowing users to create landscape videos. This move appears to be a strategic effort to compete more fiercely with established video-sharing giants like YouTube.

With its format primarily focused on short, portrait-style videos, TikTok has carved out a niche predominantly among younger audiences. Viral videos, often shot in a vertical format, have propelled TikTok to the forefront, making it the fastest-growing social media app globally. In a bid to broaden its appeal, TikTok has recently expanded its video length limit from one to ten minutes. This change, announced earlier this year, signals TikTok's intent to attract a more mature audience and compete directly with YouTube for informative and longer-form video content.

Experts believe this move may help TikTok claim a larger share of the digital content landscape. Paul Triolo, a technology expert at the Albright Stonebridge Group consultancy, remarked, "TikTok has been moving into YouTube territory for some time now... The goal here seems to be to appeal to a more mature audience of the type that uses YouTube for informational and learning videos, where a full-screen mode would be more desirable."

Creating Options for Creators

Carolina Milanesi, founder of The Heart of Tech consultancy, echoes this sentiment, arguing that these new features will enhance TikTok’s attractiveness to content creators. "Shorts have become a big part of YouTube's recent engagement, and TikTok must be worried about creators turning to YouTube for at least part of their content," Milanesi stated. The optional landscape video format could allow creators to explore various filming styles and enhance the viewer experience.

Though TikTok has a robust user base, particularly among younger users, some experts suggest that the two platforms—YouTube and TikTok—will coexist as valuable entities within the digital content landscape. Jonathon Hutchinson, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, opines that while YouTube may attract users for higher-quality production values, TikTok will continue to thrive as the go-to platform for shorter, more spontaneous content creation.

Global Scrutiny and Calls for Ban

The popularity of TikTok is not without its hurdles. The Chinese-owned platform has encountered significant backlash due to concerns that its data collection practices may represent a threat to users' privacy and even national security. Lawmakers in the United States have introduced bills aiming to ban TikTok, attributing their concerns to its ownership by the Chinese tech conglomerate ByteDance. Similar sentiments have echoed in Australia, Taiwan, and even India, which implemented a ban on the app back in 2020 amid military tensions.

This prevailing climate of uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s operation continues to generate divided opinions among lawmakers and users alike. For many creators, the app represents a valuable avenue for income generation; however, for governments, the apprehension over potential misuse of user data has become too significant to ignore.

According to Hutchinson, "YouTube has significantly higher production values and takes users longer to align with those production aesthetics."

Both platforms now serve distinct yet overlapping markets, with TikTok appealing to those seeking immediacy and spontaneity, while YouTube continues to thrive on longer, more curated experiences. Therefore, the question remains: will the changes at TikTok lead to a significant migration of users from YouTube, or will each platform forge its path, fostering diverse content ecosystems?
