Thailand Launches Summer Festivals To Boost Tourism

Prime Minister unveils '7 Months 7 Wonders' initiative aiming for over 40 million visitors

Thailand is gearing up for an exciting summer as the government launches the "Thailand Summer Festivals" project, aimed at boosting tourism and inviting everyone to experience the country's diverse cultural celebrations. Premier Phaethongthan Shinawatra officially opened the initiative on February 26, 2023, at the Government House, emphasizing the concept of "7 Months 7 Wonders Summer Festivals" featuring various events across Thailand.

The program plans to run from March to September 2023, showcasing seven thematic categories: Songkran Festival, Pride Festival, Cultural Festivals, Music Events, Sports Events, Culinary Events, and Arts and Creative Festivals. The goal is to address seasonal dips in tourism and keep the momentum going throughout these seven months.

According to Phaethongthan, the government is targeting to welcome over 40 million tourists this year, significantly up from 36 million the previous year. She stated, "We hope to hit 38 million tourists, or even surpass 40 million. Ensuring the safety of our visitors is important, achieved by collaborating with the Royal Thai Police, the Tourism Police, and foreign volunteers to create smooth and secure travel experiences throughout the nation."

The Minister of Tourism and Sports, Suwong Tienthong, shared additional enticing details about the activities planned during the seven-month period. For example, the Maha Songkran World Water Festival will take place from April 11 to 15, 2023, aiming to rank among the top ten global festivals. Various regions will host their versions of this lively tradition to promote local participation.

Following the Songkran celebrations, the northern and northeastern regions will showcase the grand candle festival in May, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Thailand. August will see Thailand hosting the world women's volleyball championship, which will draw 32 countries to four provinces, presenting another significant opportunity for global engagement.

June will spotlight Pride Month, featuring numerous water parades and events across cities such as Bangkok, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, and Phuket, showcasing Thailand's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

Reflecting aspirations to position Thailand as one of the top five tourist destinations globally, Suwong assured, "We are confident we can achieve our goal of welcoming 39 million visitors. We aim to be recognized as exemplary hosts for all our guests throughout these festivities." With strategic planning and community participation, the "Thailand Summer Festivals" promises to invigorate the nation's tourism and cultural vibrancy, welcoming people from around the world to experience the amazing wonders of Thailand.
