Ten Years Since Boris Nemtsov's Assassination: Tributes And Calls For Justice

Diplomatic representatives and local activists honor Nemtsov's legacy amid continued efforts for accountability.

On the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Boris Nemtsov, memorial events unfolded across Moscow and other cities, marking this significant day for democracy and the memory of the noted opposition politician. Near the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge, where Nemtsov was tragically gunned down on February 27, 2015, members from various embassies, including those from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany, gathered to lay flowers and reflect upon his legacy.

The atmosphere was tinged with tension as police officers, both uniformed and dressed plainclothes, were present to manage crowds and maintain order, prompting individuals paying tributes to be quick to leave the area. Reports indicated officers were taking notes on people present, which sparked concerns about the freedoms of those coming to honor Nemtsov by bringing flowers and lighting candles.

The memory of Nemtsov remains pivotal not just for the people who shared his political visions but for the Russian population grappling with issues of accountability and justice. Nikolai Ryabakov, the chairman of the Yabloko party, also paid respects at the scene and discussed the importance of re-addressing the unsolved questions about Nemtsov’s murder, noting, "For me, what was most important about Boris Nemtsov was his constant opposition to military solutions to conflicts, whether they were Chechen or Ukrainian. This is what he will be remembered for." His assertion highlights the values and principles Nemtsov stood for, underscoring the hope for his ideals to resurface amid the current political tensions.

Since Nemtsov's death, many volunteers have emerged to protect the memorial at Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge. Galina, one such volunteer, has devoted her efforts to preserving the memorial, stating, "We are stubborn; we won’t give up easily!" Her dedication points to the collective resolve among supporters and activists to keep Nemtsov's legacy alive, even as they navigate the pressures from authoritative forces.

The memorial has become not just a site of tribute but also a symbol of resilience against state repression. Despite attempts by pro-government activists to dismantle the memorial by removing flowers and disrupting gatherings, supporters have persisted, often rebuilding the memorial setup within hours of any assaults on it. Over the past decade, this enduring symbol has transformed Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge, now referred to as ‘Nemtsov Bridge’ among the opposition and supporters.

On this significant date, memorial gatherings took place not only in Moscow but also extended to regions like St. Petersburg, where members of the Yabloko party brought flowers to the Solovetsky Stone, honoring political prisoners. Ryabakov emphasized during his remarks the need for genuine and objective investigations around Nemtsov's assassination, much like the strongest of wishes from his supporters who desire truth and transparency.

The ten years since Nemtsov’s assassination has not dulled the pain or the hunger for justice among his loved ones and admirers. Volunteers Darya and Andrei shared insights with reporters about their experiences standing vigil at the memorial, reflecting on the many hardships they’ve shared over the years. They articulated how, even in the face of violence and state surveillance, the community continues to gather and share stories of solidarity and mutual support.

Throughout the years, various incidents have attempted to disrupt the memory shared by these communities. Volunteer Ksenia recounted moments where intentions have been undermined, noting how volunteers are often subjected to intimidation, with memories flooding back of previous altercations with pro-government activists. "It feels like this bridge is our last stand," Ksenia noted with palpable emotion as she described her attachment to the site.

The gathering of supporters serves not only as remembrance of Nemtsov's life and work but also as affirmation of their commitment to democracy and freedom of expression in Russia. Even as authorities attempt to erase his memory through intimidation, each bouquet placed at the memorial today was not just for Boris Nemtsov; it symbolized defiance against state-sponsored violence.

At the heart of these memorials is the communal desire to uphold the legacy of Boris Nemtsov, who remains synonymous with hope for many within the opposition movement. Both vigil and remembrance will continue, underlining the notion shared by many volunteers: “We must keep his memory alive.”
