Teen Embraces Tan Amid Trolling On Sunbed Addiction

Megan Blain battles online trolls as she navigates her sunbed addiction and beauty standards

Meet Megan Blain, an 18-year-old from Seaham, County Durham, who has found herself embroiled not just in the quest for the perfect tan, but also the ruthless world of online trolling. After using sunbeds daily for the past two years, Megan has taken her tanning obsession to new extremes, defying the haters who say she looks more like "a dirty 2p coin" than the sun-kissed goddess she aspires to be.

It's hard to miss the allure of sun-kissed skin, especially for teens trying to look their best. For Megan, the tanning addiction began when she was just 16 years old. Initially, she sought to maintain what she thought was a healthy glow and swapped out traditional fake tanning products for frequent visits to sunbed salons. Part of her routine now includes self-injecting tanning agents, which she insists help her achieve the ultra-dark tan she craves.

"I want to stop one day but can’t ever picture myself not going on the sunbeds," she confesses, admitting to being trapped in this unhealthy routine. She used to boast about spending up to half an hour on the tanning beds, frequently slathered with baby oil to amplify the effects of the UV lights. Despite grappling with nausea and loss of appetite from tanning injections, she says she feels glamorous and refuses to let the trolls dim her shine.

Megan is not alone; there’s no shortage of young people caught up in the sunbed craze. Many see it as just part of beauty culture, but the health risks associated with such behaviors tell a different story. Experts warn against the dangers of tanning addictions, which can lead to long-term skin damage and increase the chances of skin cancer later on. Alarmingly, Megan herself has acknowledged this risk, saying she’s aware of her addiction and has since dialed back her sunbed usage to just four times per week.

Megan describes her relationship with tanning as both complex and toxic. The empowerment she feels from being tanned is overshadowed by the constant barrage of negative remarks online. Yet, she continues to chase what she perceives as perfection, feeling compelled to darken her skin even more, often dismissing the critics as just noise. "You could end up addicted without even realizing like me," she cautions, recognizing the very spiral she finds herself trapped within.

The culture surrounding tanning and beauty ideals doesn't only impact Megan's self-esteem; it interacts with social media, where comments can be brutal and unforgiving. "I never feel dark enough," she says, hinting at the perpetual dissatisfaction many feel when they attempt to fit societal beauty standards. Whether it’s the trolls commenting on her looks or the overwhelming urge to maintain her tan, the entire process is both deeply personal and eerily public.

Megan isn’t just dealing with abstract fears or anxieties; her body is reacting to her daily routine. She admits to sometimes feeling sick from her tanning regimen, and she’s not shy about sharing this. Still, the idea of giving up her tan seems unfathomable. It raises questions about what drives individuals to engage so deeply with beauty rituals, sometimes at the expense of their health.

The juxtaposition of seeking beauty against the realities of health is underscored by the numerous warnings available on the topic. Experts have long shed light on the dangers of UV exposure, including the grim reality of potential skin cancer. Yet for many, like Megan, these warnings seem distant and often neglected. Perhaps balancing these aspirations with practical health advice could be the proactive measure needed for young tanners.

Megan's story isn’t just about one teenager's obsession but reflects broader themes of beauty standards and the lengths individuals go to achieve them. Are we willing to sacrifice our health for vanity? Can social media evolve from being platforms for bullying to places of acceptance? These questions linger as we observe the continuous chase for the perfect tan.

While Megan acknowledges the negative attention, including one troll telling her she appears "cremated", her resolve remains unshaken. Each trolling remark hones her desire to keep going, battling the stigma surrounding her choices head-on. After all, her tan may be shunned by some, but for Megan, it signifies something much more than skin deep.

It remains to be seen how this story will evolve. Will Megan continue on her tanning marathon, or will she find herself able to step back and appreciate her natural beauty? Only time will tell, but her experience highlights the struggle many face when caught between the desire for acceptance and the harsh judgments of others.
