Swatch Launches MoonSwatch 1965 To Celebrate NASA's Historic Timepiece

On March 1, the new MoonSwatch commemorates the 60th anniversary of Omega's Speedmaster as NASA's official watch for space exploration.

On March 1, 2025, Swatch is set to launch the MoonSwatch 1965, honoring the 60th anniversary of the legendary Omega Speedmaster's certification as NASA's official watch. This unique release is expected to attract watch enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The MoonSwatch 1965 pays tribute to the industriousness of the Omega Speedmaster from 1965, the only timepiece to meet NASA's rigorous standards for space travel. After extensive testing subjected to extreme conditions, including temperature variations and pressure changes, the Speedmaster emerged victorious among Rolex and Longines during NASA's watch trials, earning its place as the go-to watch for astronauts.

According to industry insiders, the new MoonSwatch 1965 features notable design innovations, including a grey bioceramic case, black tachymeter bezel, and a white dial. The inner workings of the chronograph have also seen clever modifications. Unlike standard models, the subdials at 10 and 2 o’clock have been calibrated to total 19 hours and 65 minutes, respectively, distinctly denoting the year 1965. At 6 o’clock, the counter continues to read 60, echoing the Speedmaster's longstanding association with historical timekeeping.

Unveiled after the successful release of the white-dial Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, which had seen immense popularity, Swatch hopes to repeat past triumphs with this special release. Collectors and fans have already shown great anticipation, eager to experience this exciting blend of history and design.

“This timepiece is not just another addition to the MoonSwatch line; it holds significant historical value,” noted watch experts following the initial announcement. Supporting this sentiment, the watch features the vintage Omega logo, reminiscent of the original 105.003 Speedmaster design.

Upon closer examination, the new MoonSwatch 1965 contains several Easter eggs, paying homage to its lineage. The luminescent numbers—19, 65, and 60—reveal their significance under UV light, enhancing the watch’s allure. The innovative chronograph mechanics also set it apart from typical quartz watches, adding meaningful complexity and functionality for quotidian wear.

To finalize the watch's aesthetic, the chronograph's aesthetically pleasing white dial and grey velcro strap form functional ties to astronaut equipment, reflecting the playful yet practical spirit of the MoonSwatch series.

“The MoonSwatch 1965 is certainly more than just another model—it resonates with the heart of Omega's connection to space history,” commented one prominent watch collector.

Notably, the MoonSwatch 1965 will be available at selected Swatch stores for about $270, placing it within reach for enthusiasts eager to celebrate the rich heritage of the Speedmaster series. Given the interest surrounding its predecessors, this model is expected to sell out quickly upon its release.

While Omega and Swatch continue their successful partnership, the MoonSwatch 1965 serves as another compelling chapter, reflecting Omega's legacy as the timekeeper of choice for humanity's greatest adventures. This perfect blend of nostalgic design and contemporary craftsmanship promises to enthrall fans and collectors alike, proving once again why it is more than just another watch release.
