Spanish Female Athletes Captivate The Public With Their Popularity

A recent study ranks Carolina Marín, Mireia Belmonte, and Ana Peleteiro as Spain's most admired sportswomen contributing to the rise of women's sports.

Spain has once again demonstrated its deep admiration for female athletes, as evidenced by the just-released results of the first Barómetro Ídolas del Deporte Español study. This initiative, led by the Asociación del Deporte Español (ADESP) along with consultancies Punto de Fuga and BRT United, highlights the most admired Spanish sportswomen based on data collected from over 1,000 participants aged between 16 and 65. Topping the list are Olympic medalist Carolina Marín, swimmer Mireia Belmonte, and athlete Ana Peleteiro.

The study's findings shed light on not just who the most popular athletes are, but also the values they embody and their influence across different generations. Marín, known for her tenacity and resilience on the badminton court, has emerged as the most celebrated athlete among all age groups, including Generation Z, Generation Y, Generation X, and Baby Boomers. Following her closely is Belmonte, who garners admiration from both younger fans and older generations alike. Completing the podium is Peleteiro, who ranks third overall and fourth among Generation Z, Generation Y, and Baby Boomers, and fifth among Generation X.

The survey asked respondents to name their top five favorite female athletes, reflecting admiration based on various criteria. The results indicate not only the athletes' popularity but also the growing interest and engagement with women's sports across the country. It is worth noting the generational divides, with younger fans showing stronger support for athletes like FC Barcelona's Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí, both of whom have achieved staggering success.

Alexia Putellas, twice awarded the Ballon d'Or, ranked fourth overall, and Aitana Bonmatí was placed sixth. These athletes, particularly popular among younger viewers, continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation of female athletes. On the other hand, retired tennis star Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, who was highly celebrated during her prime, still holds significant esteem among older fans, ranking fifth overall and second among Baby Boomers.

A total of 20 athletes were recognized, extending across eleven different sports. This elite list included not only current stars but also celebrated retired figures such as Gemma Mengual and Lydia Valentín, underscoring the legacy of women's sports talents. Such diversity highlights the broader growth of women's sports, with almost 40% of the celebrated athletes no longer competing actively.

The Barómetro also breaks down the characteristics and values of these sports idols. For example, athletes categorized as 'guerreras resilientes', such as Marín and Peleteiro, symbolize determination and perseverance. Conversely, others like Ana Peleteiro and Jennifer Hermoso fall under 'voces de la igualdad', reinforcing their status as role models advocating for gender equality and empowerment within the sporting world.

During the presentation of the Barómetro, held at the Consejo Superior de Deportes, José Hidalgo, president of ADESP, emphasized the importance of visibility for female athletes, noting, "If we do not have female role models for new generations, it is difficult to advance initiatives for women in sports." Such sentiments were echoed by Almudena Cid, a retired gymnast who noted her surprise at being included among the most admired athletes after her retirement. Cid stated, "This study has provided me with much information, reinforcing how important it is to remain connected to the sport."

Following the insights provided by fans, the Barómetro also explores the brands associated with women's sports, noting how sponsorship can significantly contribute to their success and visibility. Leading brands like Nike, Adidas, and Iberdrola are recognized for their commitment to supporting female athletes and promoting women's sports more broadly.

Indeed, the Barómetro reveals trends indicating the strengthening support for female athletics. With 49% of fans expressing interest in women's sports and overall engagement surging by 4% since 2023, the growth is unmistakable. The data shows the increasing numbers of female athletes and the sports they are associated with, covering disciplines ranging from football to swimming and athletics, spreading excitement around women's sports.

All of this clearly showcases how the public's admiration for these athletes manifests not only in fan engagement but also as part of the broader cultural shift occurring within Spain. The role female athletes play transcends their specific sports, serving as examples of resilience, courage, and empowerment for future generations. Women's sports are not just gaining momentum; they embody societal progress, inspiring young girls across Spain to pursue their dreams.

From the young fans who root for the rising stars like Bonmatí and Putellas to the many who turn to retired legends such as Sánchez Vicario and Cid for inspiration, the Spanish sporting community is alive with the influence of these female athletes. The Barómetro Ídolas del Deporte Español serves as both a celebration of their success and as a beacon for increasing support and recognition of women’s sports at all levels.

Through their determination, skill, and commitment to social values, these athletes have become more than just sports icons; they are symbols of hope and empowerment for many, paving the way for the next generation of women athletes.
