SpaceX Teams Up With LG Energy For Starship Batteries

Collaboration marks first long-term battery supply deal for SpaceX as it prepares for ambitious space missions

SpaceX, the ambitious aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, has entered a significant partnership with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution to provide cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for its revolutionary Starship program. This collaboration is monumental as it marks SpaceX's first long-term battery contract with an external supplier for Starship, underscoring the company's increasing launch frequency and its need for reliable energy solutions.

Historically, SpaceX has predominantly utilized its own battery technology for spacecraft. Yet, as ambitions ramp up, the requirement for specialized external providers has become clear. According to industry insiders who spoke with the Korea Economic Daily, LG Energy Solution will deliver batteries destined for both primary and backup power systems on the Starship rocket. This shift signifies SpaceX's growing reliance on innovations from established battery manufacturers.

One of the main challenges LG Energy Solution faces is crafting batteries capable of enduring the extreme conditions of space travel. The temperatures within Starship's engines can soar to around 3,000 degrees Celsius, demanding batteries crafted to withstand such intense heat without losing efficacy. These requirements highlight the specialized nature of the technology involved.

This partnership is beneficial for both parties. For LG Energy Solution, it not only expands its portfolio, which already includes substantial contributions to electric vehicle batteries but ties it to space endeavors—an area it has identified as key for future growth. The firm has previously supplied battery solutions to NASA's spacesuits and is slated to deliver batteries for the upcoming lunar electric rover set to launch by 2025.

Starship, known for its reusability—akin to current commercial airplanes—is ambitious. During its initial flight earlier this year, it stood as both the heaviest and most powerful vehicle ever launched, with the ability to transport up to 100 passengers or cargo up to 100 tons to destinations, including Mars. SpaceX aims to facilitate frequent flights using Starship, with its first major task being NASA's Artemis 3 moon mission planned for 2025.

Further matters concerning future launches are also on the horizon. Currently, SpaceX aims to conduct its next Starship launch as early as November 18, 2024. This period anticipates not just new technological advancements but also enhancements born from the collaboration with LG Energy.

The deal with LG Energy emerges during a time of great endeavor for SpaceX, especially highlighted by the recent successful fifth flight test of the Starship vehicle at their Boca Chica launch site. The test, completed on October 13, involved the Super Heavy booster and marked significant operational milestones, including controlled reentry and advanced maneuvers, showcasing the potential and reliability of the vehicle.

While the details of the contract size and value remain undisclosed, there is speculation around LG Energy's capabilities extending beyond space technology to possibly powering Tesla's humanoid robots down the line. This speculation arises partly due to LG Energy's established relationship with Tesla, another of Musk's ventures.

Experts highlight the complexity involved with developing battery power systems for space vehicles, which demand stricter safety protocols and higher energy density than typical commercial product applications, such as those found within electric vehicles or consumer electronics. Bae Jae-sung, professor of aerospace engineering at Korea Aerospace University, pointed out the multiplied pressures faced by spacecraft batteries. They must withstand intense acceleration, severe vibration during launch, and must remain functional within vacuum conditions.

Despite questions surrounding the specific engineering hurdles and safety expectations outlined, SpaceX and LG Energy Solution are optimistic about this collaboration. With the evolution of this partnership, the future of interstellar travel may become more approachable and feasible. The continuous quest for high-efficiency, high-safety power systems for space exploration is one defining feature of this exciting new chapter.

To put it simply, this partnership is pivotal not just for SpaceX and LG Energy but for the future of space travel as they work together to innovate the necessary technology to explore beyond our planet. This move reflects broader ambitions and keeps them at the forefront of both the aerospace and energy sectors.
