Seventeen Flood Warnings Issued As Storm Bert Hits Oxford

Local authorities remain vigilant as River levels rise and flood barriers are deployed for public safety

Residents of Oxford are bracing themselves as rising river levels due to persistent rainfall have led to 17 flood warnings being issued across Oxfordshire. With heavy rains continuing to sweep through the region, authorities are taking decisive measures to safeguard communities from potential flooding.

Oxfordshire has been experiencing the impacts of Storm Bert, which has caused significant rainfall over the past few days. The resulting high levels of water have prompted local authorities to place flood barriers at vulnerable locations, including Bullstake Close, Osney Island, and South Hinksey. "We are closely monitoring the situation, including overnight and over the weekend, and are prepared to take additional action if needed," said representatives from the Oxford City Council, emphasizing their commitment to keeping the public informed and safe.

It is not just the barriers serving as indicators of the flooding risk. Numerous pathways and towpaths within the city have also been affected. Specifically, the Marston Cyclepath, Willow Walk, and several towpaths from Fiddler's Island to Botley Road and from Osney Lock to Grandpont remain closed. The city council has advised residents against using these paths until they have been thoroughly inspected and deemed safe for public access.

After the rains cease, it is still risky to explore these areas. According to council officials, flood waters can undermine the structural integrity of towpaths, potentially leading to dangerous situations where sections could collapse underfoot. Managers of flood risk areas are urging residents to respect closure signs and not venture onto these compromised sections.

With road closures part of the crisis, local travel disruptions are unavoidable. Key roads like Culham Bridge, the route from Clifton Hampden to Long Wittenham, Islip Bridge, and parts of the ring road at Marston leading to Woodeaton and Islip are all shut down until it is safe to return to normal traffic. Meanwhile, some roads have reopened, with the Abingdon Road seeing traffic flowing once again.

Despite the chaos, essentials like waste and recycling collections have kept to schedule, though slight delays are to be expected due to the necessary road closures and changes to standard routes. Residents have been advised to leave their bins out for collection and to keep up with updates via Oxford Direct Services’ social media, explaining any potential delays or changes to the collection service.

The Oxford City Council is stressing the importance of working collaboratively with residents and stakeholders to manage risks effectively. The public is urged to stay informed about conditions, and to prepare for potential additional rainfall, as the weather forecasts indicate more rain could fall throughout the weekend. The community’s safety depends on everyone’s cooperation and readiness, as flood situations can evolve quickly.

While heavy rains have hampered travel and normal life, Oxfordshire residents remain resilient. They are urged to heed warnings and be cautious as flooding continues to pose serious risks. The impact and aftermath of Storm Bert are likely to be felt for some time, as water levels gradually recede and recovery efforts get underway.
