Schoolyard Transforms With Giant Umaibo Art

Daigo Elementary students create massive drawing using 50,000 corn snacks to celebrate local culture

On November 30, 2024, a unique and colorful spectacle unfolded at Daigo Elementary School located in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. What was once just schoolyard space transformed dramatically, sparking joy and excitement among students and locals alike. A gigantic chalk drawing of the iconic snack, "Umaibo," made from 50,000 of these popular snacks, took shape under the innovative hands of students and local community members. This engaging project not only highlighted the creativity of the school but also served to bring the community together.

Using over 50,000 Umaibo, which are cylindrical corn snacks produced by the confectionery company Riska, the students crafted this massive artwork measuring 12 meters tall and 20 meters wide. The artwork depicted the JR Suigun Line train as it passed over the lush surroundings of the Second Kuji River Bridge, an image unveiled only at the time of completion to maintain the element of surprise.

Students from Daigo Elementary School spent approximately two months preparing for this colossal work of art. They followed detailed blueprints, fitting the crunchy snacks together piece by piece, making precise arrangements using both the vibrant packaging colors and the snacks themselves. Each student took part, whether it was from the school’s third-floor balcony, atop platforms, or as fortunate passengers from hot air balloons hovering above to get the best view.

The final assembly came alive when they combined 286 individual parts crafted earlier by participants from local schools and event visitors. The excitement was palpable as onlookers gathered around the creation, shouting remarks like, "So many Umaibo!" and "I want to eat them!" The children ran around the courtyard, their exuberance encapsulating the spirit of the event.

Not only did the artistic project create a visual delight, but it also served as a reminder of the rich local culture intertwined with modern expressions of creativity. It became more than just a simple chalk drawing; it morphed the schoolyard, fostering community bonds and enhancing local pride through collaborative art.

The event did not escape the notice of local media, with residents capturing images and spreading the news of Daigo's artistic achievement throughout social platforms. This artistic endeavor, stemming from the school, sparked discussions on local heritage and the importance of supporting community art initiatives.

Community gatherings like this do more than beautify public spaces—they anchor folks together, creating cherished memories and fostering camaraderie. Institutions such as Daigo Elementary School showcase how art can unify and inspire, even when it's as simple as using tasty snacks to express creativity.

This massive Umaibo ground drawing invites questions about the role of art within communities and how collaborative projects can transform everyday spaces. Daigo Town's community embraces innovation and imagination, honoring both tradition and creativity, indicating what can be achieved with just some snacks, teamwork, and lots of imagination.
