Saturday Night Live Returns With Reruns Amid Anniversary Preparations

Fans can expect reruns featuring Ariana Grande as host and Stevie Nicks as musical guest before the show returns with new episodes.

Fans of NBC's iconic sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live (SNL), may be disappointed to learn there won’t be any new episodes this weekend. Instead, the show is replaying classic episodes as it approaches the monumental celebration of its 50th season. On December 28, 2024, viewers can catch the rerun featuring pop star Ariana Grande as host and music legend Stevie Nicks as the musical guest.

Season 50 of SNL has been full of laughter, packed with memorable sketches and impressive guest appearances. Highlighting its comedic prowess, the season kicked off on September 28, 2024, with actress Jean Smart hosting Jelly Roll as the musical guest. The fun continued every week with different hosts, until the decision to take breaks for reruns was announced.

According to reports, “We're getting a rerun, which appears to be the episode with Ariana Grande hosting and Stevie Nicks as the musical guest,” stated For The Win. This insight follows the not-so-great news for fans, as Andre Braddox of OnTheFlix expressed, “Unfortunately, we're back on here with some pretty bad news for you guys.”

After the December 28 rerun, NBC has decided there will be no new episodes for the next week either, which means the next fresh installment of SNL is scheduled for January 18, 2025. During those weeks, SNL will fill the slots with reruns, allowing viewers to catch up on moments they might’ve missed. The show traditionally airs at 10:30 p.m. Central Standard Time every Saturday night.

For viewers eager for live comedy, they’ll need to be patient, but it will definitely be worth the wait as SNL gears up to celebrate its rich legacy. Exciting events and specials are planned for the landmark anniversary, as detailed by sources. The show plans to return with exciting fresh content, so viewers can anticipate what’s next after the reruns.

The 50th-anniversary celebrations promise to be spectacular, with exclusive content capturing the essence of SNL's storied history. There's also upcoming special programming involving significant musical episodes co-produced by none other than music mastermind Questlove, who is directing and producing specific specials to spotlight musical performances over the years. Reports mention, "Questlove is the lead executive producer on 'SNL' music special coming next year to mark the show’s 50th anniversary."

Fans can catch these specials alongside the reruns, giving them the opportunity to revisit the best musical moments SNL has cultivated across decades. One of the special documentaries titled SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night will premiere on January 16, 2025, on Peacock, spotlighting the history, iconic sketches, and exclusive behind-the-scenes moments.

Therefore, as SNL fans watch the reruns, they can also look forward to Questlove’s documentary, which promises to provide fun insights, never-before-seen audition footage, and highlights of the most loved sketches, including the infamous ‘More Cowbell’ segment featuring Will Ferrell.

The celebrations won’t end there! On February 16, 2025, SNL will air its 50th-anniversary celebration live, marking the occasion with humor, special guests, and surprise performances. This live primetime special is set to run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. E.T. on NBC and Peacock, enticing fans of all ages to tune in.

Before the big celebration, SNL's first month of 2025 will also kick off with new sketches and performances. With SNL’s legacy poised to reach ever greater heights, regular viewers eagerly await the return of their favorite late-night comedy show. Stay tuned!
