Rochester Park Set For Major Enhancements

Community invited to participate as new amenities and upgrades are planned for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

Rochester, Minn. (KTTC) – Enhancements are coming to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (RDMLKJ) Park, and Rochester Parks & Recreation invites residents to learn more about what new features are coming to the park.

Some of these enhancements include upgrading existing facilities as well as new amenities. Notably, restrooms and a splash pad water playground will be added to the park. The upgrades will also expand the basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and community gardens, ensuring the park’s facilities are fitting for resident needs.

Funding for these improvements amounts to $1.5 million from the city, backed by the 2020 Park Levy, which was approved by voters, alongside another $1.5 million from federal sources through the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Grant Program. This significant $3 million investment aims to maintain the park as a vibrant and accessible space for all residents.

To facilitate community involvement, two public engagement events are scheduled. The first is the Community Resource Fair, taking place on Friday, February 28, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center located at 30 Civic Center Drive SE, Rochester. This event is intended to inform residents and enable them to share their views on the proposed park enhancements.

Following the fair, residents can attend the Open House on Thursday, March 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Residences of Old Town Hall, located at 607 E Center Street, Rochester. This open house will offer another opportunity for community members to express their thoughts and learn more about the enhancements planned for RDMLKJ Park.

According to the Rochester Parks & Recreation Department, these improvements “will secure the park remains vibrant and accessible for all residents.” The enhancements to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park strive to address the growing needs of the community, enhancing both communal activities and the overall park experience.

The city is encouraging participation from all community stakeholders. Local residents are invited not only to discover what exciting new features will be added but also to voice any suggestions they may have during the upcoming events. The improvements are expected to provide significant benefits to the community, making the park safer, more enjoyable, and inclusive.

With the proposed upgrades and new amenities, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is set to become even more of a focal point for recreation, bringing together families and visitors alike.
