The Puebla government is taking strong measures against irregular transport practices, announcing recent legal actions and transportation initiatives aimed at improving public safety and integrity. The Secretaría de Movilidad y Transporte (SMT), led by Silvia Tanús Osorio, is moving forward with legal reports against municipal presidents who allegedly favor illegal transport operators.
During visits to Xicotepec and Huauchinango, Tanús Osorio held discussions with taxi operators who voiced concerns about local mayors reportedly protecting unlicensed transporters. “These actions are serious because they protect illegal transport and undermine legitimate operators,” stated Tanús Osorio. If the accusations are substantiated, the SMT plans to file complaints with the Secretaría de Anticorrupción and the Fiscalía General de Justicia for investigation and accountability.
Over the coming days, the SMT will begin inspections of taxi, colectivo, urban, and intercity transport units to detect irregularities and enforce compliance with legal standards. Tanús Osorio warned transport operators who fail to meet regulations would have the option to voluntarily surrender their concessions or risk having their permits revoked.
These initiatives are part of wider efforts by the Puebla state government under Governor Alejandro Armenta, who is also tackling issues of judicial integrity. During his morning briefing at the Centro Integral de Servicios, Armenta condemned the misuse of influence within the judiciary, emphasizing the necessity for transparency. He asserted, “No one can claim or act on my behalf without authorization; friendships do not grant impunity.”
Investigations are underway to identify those misrepresenting connections to the governor's office to prevent abuses of power. Armenta stressed the need for collaborators to help dismantle potential schemes of influence trading, pointing to the gravity of such actions as criminal.
Besides addressing transport and judicial matters, Governor Armenta is evaluating alternative transport systems such as the Cablebús, which may be implemented to help ease urban congestion and provide modern solutions for Public Transportation. A recent trip to Mexico City allowed him to inspect the Cablebús operations, which are hailed as groundbreaking and efficient modes of urban mobility.
Armenta expressed interest in adapting the Cablebús for Puebla, particularly to improve access to La Malinche, combining transportation with plans for constructing new sports training facilities. The project aligns with sustainable urban development goals, as each Cablebús cabin accommodates ten passengers and significantly reduces travel times, benefiting high-density areas.
The proposed Cablebús system is noted as the largest urban aerial mobility project across the Americas, adhering to European safety and construction standards. The system aims to connect various neighborhoods and promote social equity by improving accessibility to jobs and services across Puebla.
Currently, Puebla's transport initiatives, alongside judicial reforms, represent the government’s commitment to enhancing both mobility and public trust. By cracking down on irregular operations and addressing corruption, the Armenta administration seeks to pave the way for more legitimate, efficient, and secure public transport systems—ultimately fostering higher standards of governance and citizen services.
