Boston Logan International Airport found itself embroiled in chaos on Monday as two distinct plane collisions rattled the usually busy grounds, coinciding with the Thanksgiving rush. Starting off the tumultuous day, the first collision occurred when an American Airlines jet, taxiing toward its gate after arriving from London Heathrow, accidentally clipped the wing of a parked Frontier Airlines aircraft. This Frontier flight, slated for departure to Dallas-Fort Worth, was waiting at the gate with about 200 passengers on board. Fortunately, no one was reported injured as safety protocols were swiftly implemented.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), “The American Airlines flight had just landed when it struck the wing of the Frontier plane.” The collision registered as unexpected by passengers and crew aboard both aircraft. "It was terrifying," commented Evelyn Pipione, who was traveling on the Frontier plane. "There was a sudden ‘thump,’ like something fell underneath." Video footage from witnesses illustrated the aftermath of the incident, showcasing visible damage to the Frontier aircraft and prompting immediate evacuation protocols.
Following the collision, American Airlines stated, "The aircraft has been removed from service for inspection by our maintenance team. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this caused." Meanwhile, the Frontier spokesperson confirmed, “No injuries were reported among passengers or crew on the Frontier aircraft.” Despite the lack of injuries, all passengers were forced to rebook their travel plans, leading to frustration, particularly as Thanksgiving approached.
The Frontier airlines took steps to compensate affected travelers, offering each passenger involved a $100 credit for future travel, alongside options for full refunds or rebooking. The response was aimed at alleviating some of the inconvenience caused by this unanticipated event.

Hours later, another collision unfolded when a tug vehicle, responsible for towing an empty JetBlue aircraft, struck the Cape Air plane which had just landed from Nantucket and was awaiting gate assignment. This incident involved two pilots and three passengers on the Cape Air plane, which significantly raised concerns, particularly since this occurred just after the first collision.
Miraculously, again, no severe injuries were reported. Yet, as a precautionary measure, both pilots and one passenger from the Cape Air flight were taken to the hospital. A Cape Air spokesperson later confirmed, “Out of an abundance of caution, both pilots and one passenger were transported to the hospital, treated, and released shortly afterwards.” The swift response showcased how emergency protocols were effectively followed, ensuring passenger safety was prioritized amid the commotion.
The way things unfolded caught many off guard. Caroline Agid, who witnessed the aftermath of the second collision, noted, "The front of the Cape Air plane looked crushed." She shared how her own travel plans with JetBlue were hampered as the airline scrambled to arrange accommodations for stranded passengers.
Both JetBlue and Cape Air confirmed their crew members were unharmed. A JetBlue representative issued reassurances, stating, “The tug has been removed from service, and the JetBlue aircraft will undergo a thorough inspection. Safety is JetBlue’s first priority, and we will investigate this incident.” Alongside this, the FAA launched investigations for both collisions, aiming to ascertain the causes behind these close calls.
The situations unfolded during one of the busiest travel periods of the year as nearly 30 million air travelers were expected to fly during the Thanksgiving week. This significant influx of travelers put pressure on airports nationwide, with FlightAware reporting almost 70 flight cancellations and over 4,300 delays on the very day of these incidents.
Despite the challenges faced, the absence of serious injuries provided relief to many.
