PHILADELPHIA – With the arrival of the annual Philadelphia Marathon Weekend, excitement fills the air as nearly 40,000 runners from both near and far gear up to hit the pavement. Taking place over the weekend of November 22-24, 2024, the marathon draws not only participants but also throngs of spectators eager to witness the challenge and camaraderie of the race.
The festivities kick off with the Health & Fitness Expo, running from Friday morning at 11:30 AM until the gates close at 9 PM on Friday evening at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. This expo offers athletes the chance to explore the latest running gear and health information, as well as activities for families, including the ever-popular Nemours Children's Fun Zone.
Saturday, November 23, marks the official start of the racing events with the Dietz & Watson Half Marathon along with the Rothman Orthopaedics 8K. Both events kick off at 7 AM at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with wheelchair athletes setting the pace bright and early at 6:55 AM. The 8K race will follow behind soon after at 11 AM, expecting to attract many more runners.
Throughout Saturday, the city will see significant traffic disruptions. Road closures will begin as early as 2 AM, affecting main routes such as the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 20th to 25th Streets, Kelly Drive, and others leading toward Center City. Motorists are urged to plan their routes accordingly and expect delays.
The marathon weekend culminates on Sunday, November 24, with the AACR Philadelphia Marathon. Runners will again gather at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with the first wheelchair athletes taking off at 6:55 AM and the general field beginning at 7 AM. This exciting culmination will also feature the Nemours Children's Run, providing family activities and competitions at 10 AM.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Philadelphia is brimming with other exciting events throughout the weekend. Visitors can experience the city’s vibrant holiday spirit through various celebrations, including holiday light displays, Christmas markets and even shows like “Elf the Broadway Musical,” ensuring there's something for everyone.
A mix of sporting events will also capture the city’s attention. For basketball fans, the Philadelphia 76ers have two noteworthy matchups lined up at Wells Fargo Center. On Friday evening, they battle the Brooklyn Nets, and Sunday brings the Los Angeles Clippers to town. This weekend is shaping up to be packed with both sports and holiday festivities.
While the excitement is undoubtedly electrifying, it’s important for locals and visitors alike to be aware of the rolling road closures and parking restrictions imposed throughout the weekend to facilitate these events. Traffic officials have advised caution and alternative route planning as streets will be intermittently closed as runners race by. Local access will be maintained whenever safe and manageable, ensuring residents and businesses are minimally inconvenienced.
From the Health & Fitness Expo and various running events to the many holiday celebrations taking place around the city, the 2024 Philadelphia Marathon Weekend promises to be filled with action, joy, and community spirit.
