Norris Tops Timesheets On First Day Of MotoGP Winter Testing

Lando Norris shines at the Bahrain Circuit, marking competitive performances from key players as teams gear up for the season.

The opening day of the 2025 MotoGP winter testing at the Bahrain International Circuit has concluded, once again showcasing familiar names at the top of the timesheets with one notable exception. The session started with Lando Norris taking his place at the forefront after some initial inactivity, demonstrating fierce competitiveness right from the beginning.

Norris, who spent the first two hours of the session inactive, managed to clock the best time of 1:30.430 after hitting the track, securing his spot firmly at the top. He not only completed reconnaissance laps during his initial stint but also finished just after coming back to the track, taking pole position against his rivals. Close behind him was George Russell of Mercedes, who confirmed the pace of his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, finishing only slightly higher than Norris by just over a tenth of a second.

Max Verstappen rounded out the top three, clocking 1:30.674, but he found himself nearly two and a half tenths behind Norris’s remarkable pace. Initially, the session saw multiple teams and drivers waiting for over 20 minutes before hitting the track, with Isack Hadjar and Esteban Ocon being among the first to emerge. For Ocon, who faced difficulties with his VCARB02 throughout the session, it was all about getting comfortable with the new vehicle.

Verstappen, who anticipated higher performance, managed to set only 1:33.3 due to cold track temperatures coupled with hard tires, which likely contributed to understeering issues. Following him, other drivers such as Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc also took to the track, but it was Norris who was able to execute the first competitive lap with confidence.

Interestingly, just before reaching the two-hour mark, Norris made his first competitive lap count. His ability to consistently log impressive lap times may have sent cautionary signals to rival teams, hinting at McLaren's preparedness for the upcoming season.

The Bahrain International Circuit experienced some drama when the testing session was interrupted due to unexpected power outages, leading to delays for approximately one hour. Fans and teams were relieved when officials announced the session would resume, along with extending the session by one hour to make up for the lost time.

Once the track opened again, Norris continued to hold his lead, with Russell and Verstappen now closely chasing him, pushing the limits on performance. The closing part of the session saw intense activity, with Norris, Russell, and Verstappen all setting records across the sectors.

There was also enthusiasm for rookies like Hadjar, who continued to strive to find his pace against veteran competitors. Most drivers eagerly returned to the track after the power issues, wanting to maximize their time before the winter tests conclude.

Across the two testing sessions, teams focused on assessing the balance and pace of their machines as they prepare for the competitive season, fostering excitement among fans eager to witness how closely matched drivers will be heading down the stretch come race days.

With each driver turning significant lap counts, including Ocon, Hadjar, and Verstappen participating amid varying weather conditions, fans and analysts are wondering if the distances between lap times will tighten even more than seen previously. All eyes are set on the upcoming sessions as the anticipation grows about possible rivalries and challenges within the championship this season.
