A young mother has tragically died after being struck off her e-bike during what authorities are calling a "hit-and-run murder". Alana Armstrong, who was only 25, was riding with another person when they were pursued and rammed by a dark-colored Land Rover. The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening around 20:00 GMT on Batley Lane in Pleasley, Derbyshire.
According to Derbyshire Police, Armstrong was riding pillion on one of two e-bikes, and the rider, identified as a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. Reports indicate he had to undergo amputation of one of his legs below the knee due to the crash.
Ch Supt Dave Kirby of Derbyshire Police confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating, "Alana was just 25 – and a mum to a six-year-old boy. Her little boy, along with her wider family, will never get the chance to see her again, hug her again, spend Christmas together, or celebrate all those milestones."
The police are treating the incident as murder, and their investigation is currently underway. They have also indicated they are keeping the details of the inquiry under wraps at this early stage.
Witness accounts suggest the dark 4x4 vehicle was following the pair for some time before assaulting them. Police stated the Land Rover turned right onto the A617 after the collision, and they are soliciting help from the public. They particularly want information from anyone who may have seen the vehicle, which is believed to be manufactured between 2004 and 2009.
Following initial arrests, police have released those questioned without charges, marking them as no longer interest to the investigation. Nonetheless, Kirby emphasized the importance of collective assistance from the community: "We have already received a significant amount of information from the public and I want to thank everyone who has come forward already to help our investigation," he explained. He urged others to come forward: "If you were the driver of the vehicle, come forward and talk to us. We'll be coming to speak to you at some point... tell us what happened."
Kirby, expressing his empathy for Armstrong’s family, added, "I am devastated for her little boy, her family, and her friends, and we will do all we can to find those responsible." Emphasizing the impact on the community, he mentioned the boy's loss of his mother and the far-reaching effects it could have on future celebrations and family gatherings.
Arrests leading to no charge add to the complexity of the already painful situation for the family and community, leaving many questions unanswered. The authorities are determined to pursue the case actively, and as the investigation progresses, they are hopeful for more leads from the public.
This incident has struck a chord within the local community, prompting sorrow and raising awareness about safety on the roads, especially involving vulnerable road users such as cyclists and e-bike riders. With the inquiries still open and many leads to follow, the hope is for swift justice for Alana Armstrong and her grieving family.
Derbyshire residents who witnessed the crash or have any information are encouraged to contact local law enforcement immediately, as every piece of information may play a significant role in solving this case and bringing those responsible to justice.
