Morocco Makes Historic 168-Train Purchase Ahead Of 2030 World Cup

The significant acquisition includes TGV trains as part of larger infrastructure investment plans.

Morocco has made headlines with its recent acquisition of 168 trains in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal. This monumental deal, announced on February 26, 2023, is valued at approximately 2.8 billion euros and marks a significant step for the nation as it enhances its railway infrastructure.

The order includes various models from three major companies: French manufacturer Alstom, Spanish firm Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), and South Korean company Hyundai Rotem. Among these purchases are 18 TGV trains, known for their speed and efficiency, directly contributing to the modernization of Morocco's transportation network to facilitate easier travel during the World Cup.

Notably, the second high-speed rail line is set to span 400 kilometers, connecting Kénitra and Marrakech. Alstom, which has previously developed the first high-speed rail link between Tanger and Casablanca, has established its presence with a factory located in Fès. The factory not only supplies electric cabinets and wiring systems but also supports local employment and the economy.

Henri Poupart-Lafarge, the CEO of Alstom, remarked during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Morocco last October, "The train we are talking about is of the latest generation and has the best market performance in terms of total operational cost." This statement emphasizes the advanced technology and performance capabilities of the trains being procured.

Of the total order, CAF has been awarded the contract to supply 30 modern intercity trains, with the possibility to procure 10 additional units. Meanwhile, Hyundai Rotem has been tasked with the delivery of 110 urban transport trains, enhancing connectivity among various cities and their suburbs.

These initiatives are part of the Moroccan National Rail Office's (ONCF) broader strategy, which has earmarked 8 billion euros for the railway sector from 2024 to 2030. This investment is not solely for World Cup preparations; it envisions a comprehensive upgrade of the railway system to boost transportation efficiency across the country.

The ONCF also has plans to establish local manufacturing capabilities for suburban trains, indicating Morocco's ambition not only to modernize its infrastructure but also to position itself as a potential exporter of train systems. This move aligns with the nation's objective to develop its rail industry significantly.
