Martin Necas Thrives With Avalanche After Trade

Finding instant chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon, Necas makes immediate impact on the ice.

What a difference just weeks can make in the NHL. After the blockbuster trade between the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche, many fans believed the Hurricanes had scored big by acquiring star Mikko Rantanen. Yet, the Finnish forward has struggled to find his place since moving to Raleigh, making only three points—one goal and two assists—in his eight games there. Meanwhile, Martin Necas, traded to Colorado, has taken full advantage of his new opportunity.

Since joining the Avalanche, Necas has showcased his skills by racking up nine points (four goals and five assists) over just ten games. His performance creates ample buzz, particularly after his recent statement about the style of play with his new teammates, which seemed to unintentionally poke fun at the struggles Rantanen has faced back with the Hurricanes.

“It’s definitely working for my game,” Necas reflected on his transition to Colorado, via NHL.com. “They’re a puck-possession team, one of the best in the League for sure, along with Edmonton, I would say. It’s just fun to play with these guys.”

Necas made several observations about his immediate connection with Nathan MacKinnon, who has contributed significantly since Necas's arrival, tallying 12 points (two goals and ten assists) during this timeframe. “Nobody expected it, especially at the time of year; there weren’t a lot of trades really happening then,” Necas said after learning about the trade from social media, expressing surprise at the rapid developments.

High praise has not only come from Necas but also from MacKinnon, who expressed gratitude for the addition of Necas to the roster. “I think we have a similar style of game,” MacKinnon commented, noting their shared approach to offense. “We both like to carry it off the rush; we’re both righties.”

Just recently, Necas highlighted his contributions to the Avalanche significantly with three assists during their 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on February 26. He tallied his third game with at least three assists this season, continuing to build on his success since the trade. Throughout the current season, Necas has accumulated 67 points, with 20 goals and 47 assists overall, putting him just four points shy of matching his career best.

Overall, Necas's swift integration and rising star power exemplify how trade dynamics can shift dramatically within months. With the Avalanche aiming for success this season, Necas's offensive prowess seems to align perfectly with their aspirations.

Even with Rantanen's challenging start with Carolina and the Hurricanes experiencing their own struggles, it appears both teams are adjusting their strategies and player dynamics heading toward the playoffs.

With the chemistry formed between Necas and MacKinnon, Avalanche fans are likely hopeful for what this promising partnership can bring as they move closer to postseason play. Should Necas keep his momentum, there’s no telling how this can change the playoff outlook for Colorado.
