March Sees Dragon Age: The Veilguard Join PlayStation Plus

The RPG makes waves as part of the monthly free game lineup just months after its launch.

PlayStation Plus subscribers have something to cheer about this March as Sony has unveiled its lineup of free monthly games, which includes the highly anticipated Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Notably, this installment of BioWare’s cherished RPG franchise just launched four months ago, making its swift addition to the service quite surprising.

Set to be available from March 4 to March 31, 2025, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will offer players the chance to assume the role of Rook, the game’s new protagonist. Rook will lead seven companions against two ancient, godlike beings threatening the world of Thedas, blending character-driven storytelling with tactical combat. Players can expect deep narratives and epic battles, hallmarks of the series.

Alongside Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players will also have access to the remastered classic Sonic Colors: Ultimate for PS4 and the nostalgic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, available on both PS4 and PS5. This triple treat aims to cater to diverse gaming preferences, making March 2025 particularly enticing for subscribers.

Released on October 31, 2024, Dragon Age: The Veilguard received mixed reviews but generated significant buzz at launch. Critics praised its engaging narrative but noted challenges with sales post-release. Acknowledging this, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson remarked earlier this month on the struggles the title faced, indicating it might have seen greater success had it followed the live-service model, which has become dominant in the gaming industry.

From the get-go, the title has been embroiled in controversy—its rocky development phase began back in 2015, and the game was released after several delays and setbacks. Although it garnered attention during its launch window, EA revealed the game didn't resonate with enough players to achieve its sales targets, leading to significant restructuring at BioWare and layoffs within the studio.

These changes come amid rising competition within the RPG market, which is replete with numerous strong contenders. While Dragon Age: The Veilguard may not have met EA’s lofty expectations, it still offers RPG enthusiasts a chance to explore its rich world and extensive lore as they engage with Rook's quest.

The other games featured this month also promise to entertain. Sonic Colors: Ultimate, originally launched in 2021, revamps the Wii classic, allowing players to navigate multidimensional levels at lightning speeds. Players will once again join Sonic on his adventure to liberate the Wisps from Dr. Eggman's clutches, all the time enjoying enhanced graphics and new features.

Meanwhile, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection brings back 13 beloved games from the franchise, covering its Golden Age from 1989 to 1994. For fans of the series, this collection is not only nostalgic but also features multiplayer capabilities—transforming solo play experiences from back when these games first launched.

To summarize the full lineup, PlayStation Plus Essential members gain free access to the following games starting March 4:

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard (PS5)
  • Sonic Colors: Ultimate (PS4)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (PS4/PS5)

This offering from Sony not only provides value for subscribers but also raises questions about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s long-term future and its continued legacy within the gaming community. With free access to such titles, subscribers are encouraged to give the game another shot, potentially bringing new players to Thedas.

For those who haven't picked up February’s lineup of PlayStation Plus games—featuring titles like Payday 3, High on Life, and Pac-Man World Re-Pac—there’s still time, as they are available until March 3. This month’s selections provide not just dramatic storytelling and tactical combat but also high-paced fun and nostalgic memories, ensuring every PlayStation Plus player can find something to enjoy.
