Man Charged After Over 100 Roosters Seized

Authorities uncover illegal cockfighting operation in Walkertown, leading to felony charges.

WALKERTOWN, N.C. — A man is facing serious felony charges after authorities seized more than 100 roosters in connection with an investigation into animal abuse. The incident unfolded on Thursday, April 17, 2025, when Forsyth County Animal Services received a complaint regarding potential animal mistreatment at a residence located in the 4300 block of Ben Lane.

Upon arriving at the scene, animal control officers discovered 54 roosters along with various paraphernalia associated with cockfighting. This alarming find prompted further investigation, which led authorities to another property in the 4400 block of Rocklane Drive. There, they uncovered an additional 85 roosters and more cockfighting-related items.

Benito Segura Penaloza, a 21-year-old resident of Walkertown, has been charged with one count of felony cockfighting and another felony charge related to the incident. Following his arrest, Penaloza was given a secure bond set at $10,000 and is currently detained at the Forsyth County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed further details about the investigation or the conditions in which the roosters were kept. However, the seizure of such a large number of birds raises significant concerns about animal welfare and the illegal practice of cockfighting, which is outlawed in North Carolina.

Animal rights advocates have long condemned cockfighting as a brutal and inhumane activity that often leads to severe injury or death for the animals involved. The practice also raises public safety concerns, as it can attract criminal activity and pose risks to community members.

In recent years, law enforcement agencies across the country have increased efforts to crack down on illegal animal fighting operations. The Humane Society of the United States and other animal welfare organizations have been vocal in their support for stricter laws and enforcement against such activities.

Local residents expressed shock at the news of the rooster seizure. “I can’t believe something like this was happening right here in our neighborhood,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s really disturbing to think about.”

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the case or related activities to come forward. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals in the community.

As the legal proceedings against Penaloza unfold, the case highlights ongoing concerns about animal cruelty and the need for continued vigilance in protecting vulnerable animals from abuse. Advocates for animal rights are hopeful that this incident will lead to increased awareness and action against illegal animal fighting.

The investigation remains active, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the seized roosters are being cared for by animal services, who are working to ensure their well-being.

With the upcoming court date, many are watching closely to see how the legal system addresses this serious matter. The case serves as a reminder of the responsibility that society holds in protecting animals and the efforts needed to combat animal cruelty.
