Luke Grimes Reflects On Yellowstone After Costner's Departure

Grimes says final season brought less conflict and more clarity for characters.

Luke Grimes, known for his role as Kayce Dutton on the popular series Yellowstone, has opened up about the significant changes on set following the departure of co-star Kevin Costner. Since the conclusion of the show’s fifth season, which has left fans both anxious and reflective, Grimes has made it clear how the dynamics shifted with Costner’s absence.

Grimes expressed during his recent interview with Esquire how the atmosphere became more relaxed for the final filming episodes. According to Grimes, the elimination of the character John Dutton III, played by Costner, contributed to less “conflict” on set. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone to mean some of the conflict was gone,” Grimes remarked. “Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”

This statement, which hints at the undercurrents of tension between Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan, paints a vivid picture of the series’ closing chapters. Grimes has repeatedly highlighted the strain caused by clashes between the two, particularly as they juggled filming commitments alongside other projects.

Costner himself, reflecting on the situation prior to his exit, stated, “I made ‘Yellowstone’ the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong.” Yet, the momentum leading up to Costner’s departure suggested growing frustrations, leaving Grimes and the rest of the cast to adapt quickly.

Despite the tumult surrounding the production, Grimes conveyed optimistic views about the show’s ending. He noted, “It feels like good timing. Seven years is a long time to do anything, and I had never played a character for more than a few months before. I’ve loved all of it.” His words encapsulate the bittersweet nature of wrapping up such a monumental role and the subsequent transition to what lies beyond.

With the series finale set to air on December 15, viewers are left wondering if they will be satisfied with the conclusion of the Dutton saga. Grimes expressed doubt about the reception, jokingly saying, “At the rate we’re headed, I don’t think they’re going to be satisfied with anything. Some people will realize it was very well written and well executed. But a large part will just be mad it's over.” His commentary sheds light on the challenges of meeting fan expectations, especially with the weight of unfinished stories.

Looking forward, Grimes acknowledges the possibility of spin-offs as part of the Yellowstone legacy, but his own character arc raises questions about his future on-screen. “I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends,” he mentioned, emphasizing Kayce's desire to pursue peace and simplicity after years of conflict.

Grimes also hinted at continuing his musical career, balancing this new path along with acting. Following his recent country album released earlier this year, he shared, “I hope both things (acting and music) are in the future.” Being unemployed after such a long stint on Yellowstone provided him with fresh excitement. “I had been on the show for seven years, and I loved every second of it. But to kind of have some open road and not know what's coming is very exciting.”

For fans eager to relive Grimes’ earlier seasons, all five seasons of Yellowstone are available for streaming on platforms like Peacock and Paramount+. The anticipation is high as the narrative approaches its dramatic finale, and Grimes feels confident viewers will see the series off with satisfaction, especially now as the Dutton patriarch bows out gracefully.

Although the show has concluded, the impact of Yellowstone remains potent. Its storytelling and character depth have garnered unwavering loyalty from the audience, and Grimes believes the series has found its rightful ending. While there’s always possibility for more tales to emerge from the Yellowstone universe, the finality brought by Costner's departure signifies greater journeys for the characters, and most significantly, for Grimes himself.
