LG Electronics Canada has announced the recall of over 130,000 electric range ovens due to safety concerns related to front-mounted knobs. These knobs can accidentally turn on, raising the risk of fire, according to Health Canada. The recall, officially announced on February 26, 2025, applies to slide-in and freestanding electric ranges sold between May 2016 and June 2024.
The Canadian recall affects approximately 137,257 units, as stated on the Government of Canada recall site: "Front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard." This situation has led to mounting safety concerns and sparked action from the authorities.
Since the start of the year, LG Electronics Canada has received reports of eight incidents linked to these ranges, including two minor injuries—a small cut and burn. These troubling reports prompted Health Canada to act swiftly to inform consumers affected by this safety hazard.
The ranges under recall feature five stovetop elements and control knobs positioned above the oven door. This design flaw means they can be bumped accidentally by people or pets, inadvertently activating the heating elements. Health Canada has emphasized the importance of consumer awareness and safety, particularly during cooking activities.
Compounding the issue, LG's recall mirrors similar complications faced by the company across the border. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, around 500,000 LG ranges sold between 2015 and January 2025 have also been recalled. Reports from the U.S. indicate at least 86 instances of accidental activation, which resulted in eight minor injuries and several fires, culminating in over $340,000 (USD) worth of property damage. Tragically, three pet fatalities were reported due to these fires.
For consumers who may be using the affected models, LG Electronics Canada has made clear they need not dispose of their ranges. Instead, the company recommends contacting them directly for guidance. Upon verifying ownership of the affected models using the serial number—located inside the oven door or storage drawer—customers can expect to receive free warning labels and specific instructions for placement. LG insists, "Consumers may continue to use their range..." as they await these safety updates.
Part of the advisory includes urging customers to familiarize themselves with the Lock Out/Control Lock function, which disables the heating elements when the range is not being used. LG has even provided instructional materials, including videos, to help customers properly activate this safety feature.
For owners of these electric ranges, specific guidance has been offered: first, verify whether your model is among those recalled by consulting the complete list available on the Canada.ca/recalls website or through LG’s own resources. Customers can obtain assistance from LG Electronics Canada, Inc. at 1-888-542-2623, or via email at [email protected]. Their website also provides additional details and notifications.
The range cabinets recalled measure 30 inches wide and are available in colors including black and stainless steel. Customers were advised to take immediate action upon this recall announcement to avoid potential hazards from unintentional knob activation.
Health Canada’s warning and LG’s rapid response to the situation highlight the company's commitment to ensuring product safety for its consumers. Individuals affected by this recall are strongly encouraged to act quickly to minimize safety risks and to stay updated on any future advisories related to appliance safety.
By staying informed and utilizing the provided resources, consumers can continue to use their devices safely and responsibly, with peace of mind about their household’s safety.
