Kotaro Arima Joins Oita Trinita From Iwaki FC

Striker moves to historic club after standout season, eyes J1 promotion

On December 14, Oita Trinita announced the complete transfer of 24-year-old striker Kotaro Arima from Iwaki FC, marking the latest shift in the forward's career after his notable contributions to the J2 league.

The announcement came early on the 14th via Oita's official Instagram account. While the post was quickly deleted, it stirred excitement and questions among football fans and media, with some speculating it was released prematurely. Comments online buzzed with curiosity, asking, "Is Arima really moving to Trinita?" and many expressed hope over the potential of the transfer.

Arima, originally from Ibaraki Prefecture, began his professional career with Kashima Antlers after rising through the ranks from their academy. He made his debut for the top team in 2019 but struggled to find consistent playing time. His first significant action came during two loan spells at Tochigi SC, where he made 42 appearances and scored once during the 2020 and 2021 seasons before fully transferring to Iwaki FC.

Upon joining Iwaki, Arima quickly established himself as a key player. He played exceptionally well during the 2022 season, helping the club promote to J2 after scoring eight goals across 24 matches. He followed this up with another strong performance during the 2024 season, where he played all 38 league matches, netting ten times, marking his first double-digit goal season.

Arima expressed enthusiasm over his move to Oita, stating, "I am very happy to play for Oita Trinita, a historic club. I will fight with determination! Please support me passionately. Let's aim for J1!" His eagerness reflects not just ambition for personal success but also the expectation for the club, which narrowly retained its position in the J2 league after finishing 16th last season.

Despite his successful stint at Iwaki, where he wore the number 10 and stood out as one of their best strikers, Arima felt it was time for a new challenge, and Oita provides just the opportunity he seeks. Following his transition, he took to Iwaki's official site to thank everyone, saying, "Thank you for the three wonderful years at Iwaki FC. I have grown tremendously through the experiences there. I am immensely grateful to all the fans and supporters who have cheered for me. I plan to keep playing with the diligent approach I have always taken. Thank you once again for everything."

The reactions from Oita supporters have been overwhelmingly positive, as there is hope Arima can fill the gap left by former players like Brazilian forward Samuel, who suffered a severe Achilles injury last season, as well as others like Shun Nagasawa and Shinta Watanabe, who left the club at the season's end.

The transfer solidifies Oita's intentions as they aim not just to survive but to thrive next season. With Arima now in their squad, the club’s coaching staff will likely look to bolster the attacking dynamics as they prepare to build on their J2 season performance.

Oita’s management knows they’ve added significant talent. Following the transition, Arima was readily integrated with the squad, where expectations are high for him to replicate and build upon his previous scoring records. His arrival undoubtedly brings fresh energy to the squad, needing someone to put the ball back in the net consistently.

Arima’s record at Iwaki boasts of ten goals scored this past season, making him the second-highest scorer for the team. His contributions were pivotal, and handling such pressure at his new club will be closely watched by fans and league analysts alike. Following the announcement, many fans have already begun speculating about how he will adapt to Oita’s playing style and what tactical formations the team will employ to utilize his strengths effectively.

With the transfer window alive with possibilities, and after witnessing the backend machinations of professional sports, all eyes will be on Kotaro Arima as he makes his mark at Oita. Will he lead them to J1, or will they again struggle to maintain their league status? Only time will tell, and fans are hardly able to contain their excitement as they watch the upcoming season roll out.
