Japan's Nadeshiko Wins SheBelieves Cup Against USA

With early and late goals, Japan secures historic victory over the top-ranked USA team.

Japan's women's national football team, widely known as Nadeshiko Japan, clinched their first SheBelieves Cup title by defeating the USA 2-1 on February 26, 2025, at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. This victory is particularly notable as it marks Japan’s first win over the USA since 2012 and their first championship title at the SheBelieves Cup.

Entering the final match with two wins under their belt, Japan was eager to face the world’s number one team, aiming to avenge their previous Olympic defeat against the USA. The match started dramatically when Yuka Momiki scored just two minutes after kickoff. Following a swift play initiated by midfielder Wai Hasegawa, Momiki skillfully navigated through USA defenders and scored the opening goal, sending shockwaves through the stadium.

But the USA, known for their resilience, responded quickly. Just 14 minutes later, the Americans equalized through forward Ally Sentner, who capitalized on a well-timed assist from Catarina Macario, bringing the score to 1-1.

With tensions rising, Nadeshiko Japan regrouped during the halftime break. They returned determined to reclaim the lead, and it was defender Toko Koga who stepped up. Five minutes after halftime, she seized on a rebound from Hasegawa's free-kick, following the USA goalkeeper Jane Campbell’s initial save, pushing the score to 2-1 and reigniting Japan’s hopes for triumph.

The remainder of the match saw Japan defending fiercely against relentless attacks from the USA, showcasing their strategic resilience. Even when Saki Kumagai took a blow and had to leave the field temporarily, the team did not falter. With Kumagai’s leadership and experience, Japan held their nerve, thwarting the USA’s advances and ensuring their precious lead.

Post-match, coach Nils Nielsen praised his team, expressing pride over their courage and execution throughout the tournament. “Brave enough to pass the ball, the team effort has paid off. It’s what we've aimed for to defeat strong teams like the USA today,” Nielsen remarked. His sentiments were echoed by captain Kumagai, who stated, “We finally managed to win against the USA. The coach emphasized fighting without fear, and we succeeded during the match.”

This victory not only signifies Japan’s comeback after years of struggles against the USA but also sets the tone for future competitions. It’s their first championship win at the SheBelieves Cup after five attempts, and the team leaves with newly found confidence and determination to continue eleviating the standard of women’s football.

With this remarkable performance, Nadeshiko Japan has firmly established themselves as formidable contenders on the world stage, advancing their legacy as one of the premier teams in women's soccer.
