Internacional Finalizes Signing Of Defender Juninho

The transfer from Midtjylland strengthens the squad under Roger Machado's leadership.

Internacional is making significant moves to bolster its squad with the signing of defender Juninho from the Danish club Midtjylland. The club plans to announce this acquisition shortly and finalize the deal before the closing of the transfer window on February 28, 2025.

The 30-year-old center-back has gained considerable attention from Internacional, particularly under coach Roger Machado, who has previously worked with him at Bahia. Initially targeted earlier this year, reports indicate Internacional had made an offer of €800,000, which was rejected by Midtjylland. Recent negotiations, according to RBS, have progressed, with the new proposal standing at €1.5 million (around R$9 million).

Payment for Juninho will be structured over six installments of €250,000. "Internally, the Inter evaluates this as a good business decision, especially considering the high demand for defenders at the moment," said Lucas Collar, highlighting the importance of strengthening their back line.

Juninho has been with Midtjylland since 2021, following his transfer from Palmeiras for €1.6 million. Over three and half seasons, he played 113 games, notching five goals and providing five assists, also showcasing versatility by sometimes playing as a left-back.

The importance of signing Juninho reflects Internacional’s strategic scouting, as his arrival fills the pressing need for defensive reinforcements alongside current center-backs Vitão and Victor Gabriel. The move arrives at the perfect moment, as the club anticipates fierce competition heading forward this season.

Reflecting on his past, Juninho started at Coritiba, where he carved out his reputation during his formative years before moving to more prominent clubs, including Palmeiras and Atlético-MG. His career has since flourished abroad, and his recent tenure at Midtjylland has solidified his status as one of the top choices for Internacional.

Newspaper sources reported the anticipation surrounding Juninho’s medical examinations and the signature of his contract, expected soon. With the transfer window closing shortly, both Juninho and Internacional are rushing to finalize arrangements.

The coach's endorsement plays a key role, with Roger Machado's knowledge of Juninho’s capabilities through their shared history at Bahia resulting in higher expectations among fans and management alike. This connection adds depth to the signing—as Machado sees Juninho not merely as another player but as someone familiar with his tactical philosophies and team culture.

Finally, the contractual specifics and potential impact on the squad dynamics showcase Internacional’s proactive approach to roster changes and set the stage for competitive aspirations. With the confirmation of Juninho on the horizon, the club reinforces its commitment to improve its standing within the league.
