Amazon Prime Video is set to release its highly anticipated series, House of David, on February 27, 2025. The show, which will premiere with three episodes, delves deep not only one of the most influential figures of the Bible, King David, but also the dramatic nuances of leadership and power.
According to the show’s creator, Jon Erwin, House of David carries similarities to other epic storytelling formats, particularly Game of Thrones. “I think it is a bit like Game of Thrones,” Erwin explains. “The drama of a boy chosen to be king by this prophet, in a nation which had already chosen its king… That is instant dramatic tension.” His remarks spotlight the relational conflicts and political tensions inherent to the narrative.
Erwin sees the story of David as not just relevant to biblical discussions, but as foundational for hero narratives across cultures. “Whether it's Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter, Frodo ... the classic hero's story... has its roots...in the life of David 3,000 years ago,” he notes, underscoring the universal themes of courage and destiny woven throughout the series.
The role of David is portrayed by newcomer Michael Iskander, who recounted his unique preparation process as he portrayed such an iconic figure. “I always found myself going to... the Bible and really delving deep to understand David’s character and who he really was,” he elaborated. Iskander added how his musical background was instrumental to his performance, mentioning, “I knew whoever would play David would have to sing the Psalms in Hebrew because it has to be on the original language.” His cultural experiences, particularly having grown up near the music of the Middle East, provided added layers to his interpretation of David.
Filmmaker Jon Erwin also expressed his enthusiasm around producing this show, sharing, “It’s the first global release of my career.” Erwin, who has established himself with earlier successes such as Jesus Revolution and I Can Only Imagine, retains high hopes for the series’ reception. “To be able to explore this person’s life over eight hours is really cool. I love what we’ve made. I can’t wait for the audience to see it,” he said.
The series’ format allows for more depth than traditional movie narratives. Erwin explains it will start with David’s origins as a shepherd and musician before he rises to challenge giants, both literally and metaphorically. “The first season is the origin story, the hero's story, of this boy chosen to be king,” he noted. “It does involve a giant. It’s the ascent of this outcast, as he plays music for the king and eventually takes on Goliath.”
Expectations are particularly high because Erwin envisions the House of David story spanning three seasons, illustrating the development of David as he tackles various adversities along his heroic arc.
Despite its biblical origins, Erwin believes the narrative transcends religious confines, appealing broadly to anyone fascinated by epic adventures. He described it as blending genres reminiscent of works like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. “It’s really the original coming-of-age story. If you like those types of stories, it'll feel very familiar,” he stated, aligning David’s trials with those of other well-loved fictional characters.
With the desire to produce family-centered films, Erwin founded The Wonder Project, raising over $75 million to finance projects like House of David. The recent effort showcases how significant appetite exists for family-oriented, faith-based content, supported by more than 700 professionals collaborating on production. “There’s such hunger for this type of content,” he emphasized.
Filming took place against the backdrop of Greece, chosen for its stunning visuals. Erwin remarked, “It’s one of the more gorgeous places on earth,” highlighting how location played a pivotal role in bringing David's story to life. The visuals promised to complement the rich narrative woven through David's life, filled with both triumphs and tragedies.
Erwin concludes by echoing the timelessness of David's story, reflecting on how each of us, like David, seeks purpose and finds ways to connect with God even amid challenges. “He always finds his way back to God,” he said, offering viewers both entertainment and, perhaps, inspiration on their own journeys.
