Gulmarg Gondola Service Suspended Amid Heavy Snowfall

Authorities halt gondola operations due to inclement weather affecting travel and safety.

The famed Gulmarg Gondola service, one of the highest cable car operations globally, was suspended on February 26, 2025, due to heavy snowfall impacting the region. Authorities reported accumulations reaching 33.0 cm at the popular ski resort, attracting adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world.

According to officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, the inclement weather at both Kongdoori and Affarvat has forced this significant operational halt. “Due to inclement weather at Kongdoori and Affarvat, the Gondola Services will remain suspended for the day,” they stated. For those who had purchased tickets, there was some reassurance: “Full refund of tickets will be made as per norms,” they added.

The Meteorological Department had forecast light to moderate rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir through February 28. The conditions have already been challenging, with the plains receiving consistent rainfall. Notably, Srinagar recorded about 7.8 mm of rain, with other areas like Qazigund and Pahalgam seeing significant downpours as well.

Director of Met Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmed, noted the snowfall, explaining, “The upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall... with moderate to heavy snowfall recorded.” This trend of weather is expected to persist for the next several days, causing potential disruptions on key mountain passes.

The adverse weather prompted the Met department to issue warnings about temporary disruptions to surface transportation mainly on routes such as Sadhna Pass, Razdhan Pass, Sonamarg-Zojila-Gumri Axis, and Mughal Road. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, keeping safety and travel advisories from local authorities top of mind.

Alongside this, farmers have been told to suspend irrigation and agricultural work due to the current weather conditions. These measures are precautionary, aiming to protect crops and manage vulnerabilities during this wintry phase.

Looking beyond the immediate future, the forecast indicates cloudy weather will continue from March 1-2, with potential light rain and snow scattered throughout both divisions of the region. By March 3, there is the likelihood of light to moderate rain and snow at various locations, but the weather is expected to dry out from March 4-6. The Met department has also warned of significant drops in daytime temperatures.

The suspension of the Gulmarg Gondola not only affects the daily transport of visitors to the scenic heights but also has wider ramifications for local businesses dependent on the influx of tourists during the peak winter season. The Gondola service, which reaches heights above 8,694 feet, is instrumental for both recreational skiing and sightseeing, thereby influencing the local economy deeply.

Authorities remain alert as they monitor the situation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to weather advisories and taking necessary precautions when venturing out. With the winter climate continuing to shape life and travel in Jammu and Kashmir, both residents and visitors are reminded to remain updated and prepared for unforeseen changes.

This winter’s heavy snowfall may pose challenges now, but it also invigorates the region’s beautiful landscapes, promising stunning vistas for those who can brave the elements. Adventure seekers, equipped with the right knowledge, can still find excitement even amid the clouds of snowfall blanketing Gulmarg.
