Google Streamlines Personal Information Removal Process

Users can quickly delete sensitive data directly from search results with new tools.

Google has taken significant strides to simplify the removal of personal information from its search results, announcing updates to its tool known as Results about You. This move is set to empower users by providing faster and more intuitive ways to protect their personal data, such as phone numbers and email addresses.

Previously, users had to navigate through various settings within their Google account to locate the Results about You tool for personal data removal. This arduous process is now streamlined. Users can directly initiate the removal process by clicking on the three dots next to specific search results. This updated interface now features the option “Remove this result,” allowing for quick action against unwanted exposure of sensitive information.

According to UNIAN, Google announced the update stating it is focused on helping users safeguard their personal information more efficiently. ZDNET elaborates on this by noting how effortless the new process is, where users can directly select results containing their information and simply request its removal.

Once a user selects the removal option, they are prompted to provide reasoning for the request, such as indicating the information’s personal nature. It is important to note, though, the removal request does not happen instantaneously. Google examines these requests; if deemed appropriate under company policies, the information will be excluded from relevant search results.

Users can also take advantage of this advanced function to address outdated information. For example, if personal content has been removed from a website but still appears in Google search results, users can request Google to rescan the webpage to update search outcomes. To complete this request, filling out the necessary form and providing accurate contact details is required so Google can notify users about the status of their submission.

With these updates, Google aims to fortify its users' privacy, enhancing their control over personal data online. Notably, these features are currently available only to users located within the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France, Sweden, Thailand, India, and Indonesia. The company plans to expand this functionality to more countries soon.
