EastEnders Grapples With Set Stories And Star Rumors

Reports of rodent issues and media speculation about returning stars keep EastEnders fans buzzing

EastEnders Grapples With Set Stories And Star Rumors

Stories from the EastEnders set often venture beyond the fictional drama, capturing the intrigue and sometimes bizarre realities behind the scenes.

Recently, rumors began swirling around reports of rodents on the EastEnders set. Initial claims from various media outlets hinted at what many described as a rat "infestation," particularly citing pest control specialists being called to the famous Elstree Centre.

A report featured in The Sun detailed, "Attended site for call-out due to reported rat activity in the EastEnders prop store mezzanine floor," indicating signs of damage such as "chewed products/nesting material." This alarmed some fans and spectators.

Responding to the swirling gossip, EastEnders representatives quickly took to the media to clarify the situation. An EastEnders spokesperson stated, "There is no rat infestation at EastEnders but on the odd occasion, if we have suspected an unauthorized visit from a furry visitor, we have called in the specialists." Clearly, the team wanted to nip any panic in the bud over what they termed as occasional furry friends.

Interestingly, this is not the only chatter surrounding EastEnders at the moment. Longtime star Danny Dyer, known for his role as Mick Carter, stirred speculation with his comments about possibly returning to the show. With the storylines often merging high drama with everyday life, fans are left pondering the future for their cherished characters.

Dyer, who once was reported lost at sea, jokingly remarked, "Look, I take it as a compliment" about the demand for his return. He creatively entertained the idea of possibly appearing again, hinting at realistic storylines such as Linda, his onscreen wife, dreaming or hallucinating about his character. "If they came up with an idea of maybe Linda drunk or hallucinating, then I would come back and do some scenes with her," he revealed, showing both enthusiasm and nostalgia for his time on the show.

While Dyer remains open to the idea of reappearing alongside his former co-stars, the buzz from the fans continues to grow, especially with EastEnders’ 40th anniversary celebrations fast approaching.

Viewers searching to see more of the set itself may be curious where the real-life EastEnders magic happens. Most likely, they would be surprised to learn Albert Square exists outside the fantastical E20 postcode. The actual filming location is based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Here, fans might expect to find multiple elaborate sets, including the iconic Queen Vic pub.

The BBC unveiled the new Albert Square set, which opened its doors back in 2022 after costing around £87 million to complete. This set stands just down the road from the previous one, now dating back to when the show initially gripped UK audiences with its dramatic storylines.

Notably, the set has already been graced with visits from actual royalty, as King Charles III and Queen Camila paid their respects during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, even making cameos on the show. "Few sets have been home to such drama as this BBC set," remarked one local journalist, emphasizing the area's storied history.

While fans are clamoring for the chance to visit the famous locations, there’s some disheartening news; due to the constantly busy filming schedule, visitors can’t wander freely on set. Yet there’s hope for the determined fans. A glimpse of Albert Square can be seen from nearby Clarendon Park. With clever sleuthing skills, visitors can spot rooftops and maybe even hear some dialogue from the famously intense scenes being filmed live!

Picture this: you hop on the Thameslink train to Borehamwood, making your way toward the park, where the drama of EastEnders is alive and well. It’s almost like stepping right inside the soap, if only for those brief moments of secretive glimpses.

The buzzing activity of the EastEnders crew is set to continue, even amid speculation about the fate of the current set. It was reported the BBC might sell the site to insurance giant AXA, but perhaps this is part of the ebb and flow of broadcasting.

While the studio may not be open to visits, it nonetheless thrives on the allure of the stories and stars intertwined with the daily lives of its characters. From characters like Kat Slater, dressed flamboyantly and representing fierce drama, to new storylines depicting love and betrayal—I mean, who doesn't love to see it all play out?

While the question of rats adds to the lively narrative of the locals, it’s the characters and storylines, along with the fans who hold EastEnders close to their hearts, ensuring its legacy continues, for better or worse.

What are fans to make of the modern challenges for this age-old show? Have rats really become part of the backdrop, or is it simply sensational drama? EastEnders keeps rolling forward as it has for decades, keeping viewers invested, scandalized, and entertained.
