Devotee Injured During Mahashivaratri At Lingaraj Temple

A sevayat falls from the roof as he lifts the sacred Mahadipa, causing delays but resulting in emergency care and continued celebrations.

A shocking incident occurred during the Mahashivaratri celebrations at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar when a sevayat fell from the temple roof as he was lifting the Mahadipa, alarming thousands of devotees present.

The incident unfolded on February 26 when the sevayat, after completing the Bedha Parikrama rituals, was carrying the holy lamp to the top of the temple. Unfortunately, he lost his grip and slipped off the temple wall, resulting in severe injuries to his head and pelvis.

Emergency services were quickly summoned, and the sevayat was immediately rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment. Reports indicated he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to his grievous injuries.

According to TNI Bureau, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, along with Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan and Deputy CMs, visited the hospitalized sevayat to inquire about his wellbeing. The CM, assuring the public, stated, “The sevayat is out of danger now.”

While the sevayat was receiving medical attention, the ritual of lifting the Mahadipa was briefly delayed, causing concern among the assembled crowd. Volunteers and other sevayats stepped up, ensuring the continuation of the sacred festivities. The Mahadipa was finally placed atop the temple at approximately 10:40 PM, delayed by about 45 minutes from the original schedule.

Witnesses described the typical atmosphere of the temple being overshadowed by the incident, which caused palpable distress among devotees who had gathered for this significant occasion.

Later, the local administration expressed its commitment to maintaining the safety of rituals performed at such revered sites. Discussions around improved safety measures were initiated to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future during large-scale religious events.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the celebration of Mahashivaratri continued as other rituals progressed, reflecting the resilience and dedication of both the sevayats and the community involved.

Devotees expressed their relief to hear the sevayat was safe and praised the swift action by hospital staff and local officials during the crisis.

While the night brought shadows of concern, it also highlighted the strong communal ties and shared faith experienced within the temple grounds. Events like these remind us of the vulnerabilities within human rituals but also showcase our collective spirit to support one another during times of need.

Through this incident, the Lingaraj Temple community reaffirmed its commitment to the celebration and reverence of sacred traditions, ensuring safety and spirituality will go hand-in-hand.
